Yeah they do, they research on what's good enough so they can package it and reduce costs. And then they use the same filters and housings on just about every biturbo engine in their fleet.
It's easier to make power via engine tuning (heads cam turbos etc) for a manufacturer than improving some obscure external part like a air filter housing design

Using stock filters you will not likely gain very much. It not just the additional intake volume, its the total CFM flow improvement. I do think there should be a black anodized option for the next run. Using Phenolic or composite material stock might be a better idea too. Alum get hot very quickly from ambient heat in the engine bay.

I did gain 18rwhp and 26rwtq going from K&N filter to this box plus their green (similar filtration mesh with different color, however shorter than K&N with less plastic) filter. I do agree a black Phenolic spacer in place of the aluminum would be even more awesome!

That is a huge gain over the K&N on a dyno that reads about 15% under most dynos that post #s. I picked up 20-23 RWHP going from stock filter /air boxes to the UPD induction kit. I bet your car makes 600 RWHP , if you use one of the other dynos.

KLR CLS using stock filters you will not likely gain very much. It not just the additional intake volume, its the total CFM flow improvement. Place an order for black today and I am sure we can get an extra set inline at the anodizer for black special for you

Mercedes has used the same airbox design going back 16 years or so , when they had 300 hp engines and not changed the design much , even though they have boosted cars making near 600 hp now (starving the engines).
The kit does a lot more than just add air intake volume and there are nice gains even with a stock filter, due to better filter utilization, air speed increase, drop in IATs, and eliminating a lot of the air turbulence that the stock set up has. The kits have been out for a while, but just not posted on the forum`s till recently.. I have ran this kit on my Cl55 for over a year and also on my E63 since late last summer.

Phenolic spacer material was a great marketing deal on the old Mustangs in the 90s but these modern "boosted" engines, cool, make power and operate a lot different.
Aluminum tested to be the best material for this induction design.

I was asked about install time and ease. Depending on what model engine, you will have about 30-45 parts in the kit and install is pretty quick with basic hand tools.

Got my set and I installed last night..

took me about 45 minutes... since I had to remove newly installed strut bar on my coupe. If you have removed air filters before from any recent MB.. should take you about 30 mins.

side note.: The strut bar works really well.. hope to see similar products for other MB cars. Front is feels more planted and less flex under hard cornering. With Mich PSP and strut bar....car feels a bit more playful.

Back to the filter and spacers...

I really like the materials and pieces with the kit... make sure you use the correct drill bit and cordless drill.

For the results:
torque at lower RPM is felt a bit more and there is more pull from the engine at 3 to 4k rpms. I had all the power I needed in "Eco" mode on my transmission setting. Typically I would switch to "Sport" mode to get a bit more revs and throttle response.

I was not able to make too many strong passes and during my limited rush hour traffic.. only had a chance to run to about 4k about couple of times.

The ECU is probably still adapting to the new found air and I have a feeling once I run the car harder.. the ECU will adapt a bit more.

Those that have a lease and never work on your car.. probably will make you think twice, due the visual aspect. To me this mod is simple and can be reversed in no time.

Those want a bit more edge.. this mod is great.

Hi Exotic-metal55
PM sent for UPD Cold Air Intake kit (with spacer in black if available) and UPD Perf Crank Pulley also.
Spring is coming, would like to get a 1/4 mile pass in the 10's. Will also go back on the Dyno to compare before and after HP with my friend Kart125 who will only do the CAI kit.

do you think using the weistec high flow filters w/this kit would net any additional hp/tq? weistec advertises 5-25hp from their filters and they quite a bit shorter than stock or kn

Not from all the filters we tested and dynoed. We found the filter we use in our kit to make the most power. It is short and flows great.

You had STB installed on your E550 ?

Does your E550 comes with Airmatic ?

No.

Basic steel springs.

Coupe is based on different chassis.

Ran the cold air intake on the freeway. Wow.

I bet the dynos cant account for cool morning air at 80mph... Thats when the unrestricted flow is felt in the power band.

I still have not ran the car hard, due to rain. One i get a chance, will try to go WOT to report high rpm pull.

Installed my kit about a week & a half ago. Parts are top notch. No dyno time, but the car definitely breathes better above 3000rpm. I was amazed how restrictive the stock airboxes are in OEM spec.

I installed the cold air kit two weeks ago (sorry, been traveling) and I am very happy with the results. The highway pulls feel stronger on my modded E63 Biturbo. Even the shop that installed the kit (3/4 hour labor) said that this seemed like a great fix to a design issue. I have a friend in town who dyno'd the results and confirmed the numbers you are seeing.

A fun and inexpensive upgrade, parts were solid AF.

Good morning. I'm very interested in a set of black anodized spacers. I already have a set of dry flow filters. Can the kit be bought without the filters? I also should say they are for a 2016 GLEs 63
