Hi, Exotic-metal55's first post photo links had already expired. If anybody is able to share their photos will be very helpful. Thanks.

When I removed the coils on my 2012 cls63 I used a long mini usb cable wrapped underneath the plastic extrusion on the coil and removed all of them without any damage.
I will likely buy the puller as well but I think I’m a ways away from needing plug service. Hopefully someone doing this soon, gives the puller a test.

I tackled this yesterday/ this morning. definitely the looped wire helps. although I did still break 3 wires. Dealer hooked me up at $11 each and a tube of boot grease (and a free 50 year AMG poster!). I did gap to .22. unfortunately I have a misfire in cyl.8 now. that was one I used a new wire too. I pulled it back apart. checked my torque and connections and pulled the gap out to .23. seems nothing is wrong. talking with my friend at the dealer now. will report back when I find a solution.

Also my tech at the dealer said he doesn't use any special tool to pull the wire. just warms up the engine a bit and yanks them off.

They do come off much easier with a warm engine. Hard on the hands though.

Swapped the coil packs this morning. Misfire stayed on 8. Changed the plug with a new one (bought another plug and coil pack to be safe). All set. Runs great. .22 gap on dealer plugs.

My E63 only has 2,500 miles on it so I got some time, but I'm about to change 16 plugs, yes 16, in my W210 E55 with 59k miles soon. Some recommend loosening the engine mounts and jacking up the engine for the hard to reach plug on drivers side near the firewall. I purchased this spark plug boot puller from Amazon for the W210:

I paid the dealer to change the plugs on my e55. from my experience on my e63 I'm not sure if that tool would help much

Wow, so you had a bad plug? What are the chances of that I wonder? Glad you got it sorted, but what a hassle.

How did you know you had a misfire on 8? Did you get a CEL and scan for codes? What do you use for code scanning?

Thanks.

When I return the coil pack today I'll have my tech check it out. I don't think I broke the electrode anything. Definitely didn't drop it and I have a magnetic plug socket.

As for the misfire, I knew as soon as I started it. Just revving it I could tell it wasn't right. A gentle drive around around the block was enough to register a pending misfire on 8 on my "icarsoft" reader. After checking everything and clearing the code nothing changed but it wouldn't throw the code again. So I gave it just a little boost and got the flashing CEL. Then I had the code again.

No worries now though. Took it out last night for some pics with the boys. She's a beaut.

HELP, Trouble removing coil pack connector

Hey Guys,

I can’t remove any of the spark plug electrical connectors. I slid open the gray clips but the connectors won’t budge at all. Any tips?
Thanks in advance.

Move the unlock grey connector 1/8 inch towards the back of the car. Then squeeze together grey unlock connector end and pull towards the back of the car. They will release once you have pressure on the right area. I had issues with this as well until I understood what released them, don't use any tools.

Yeah the clips are the cars are interesting. while the plugs on the Airbox slid out then you pull out a little more to release, the ones on the coilpacks pull out then you have to push down on them to release.

Once you get the first connector off you'll see what the story is. There are little plastic nubs on the connector which the clips need to get past to release. The gray clips need to be pushed down very very firmly to release the connector. Although you need to be careful, I slid a small flathead screwdriver underneath the clip as far as it could go and just pressed up with it a little. Then I was able to pull the connector off.

Thanks guys. I’ll try it again. Maybe I didn’t push down hard enough on the gray clip that slides.

They don't come off easy in most cases. I like to squeeze the grey clip down and use a small flat tool to pry the connector off the coil. It takes the right feel for it though, it's easy to break the plastic parts if you haven't done it before. Squeeze hard and pull, leave the coils bolted down to give you more leverage.

Alternatively, you can unbolt and lift the coils out, often far enough to get them off the plug, without disconnecting, on some cars. Might have to loosen the harness carrier clips to get enough room.

Agreed with the above though, once you get one off you will see what it needs.

I am in the final stages of this project now and I’m confused. Are the spark plug wires supposed to lock or clamp to the new Plugs? Mine are springing back up slightly when pushed down. It appears the only thing that will be holding down the plug wires aee the bolted down coils? Is this correct or am I doing something wrong? I’m used to plug wires firmly snapping onto the plugs and none of mine are doing this?

Thanks a bunch! It’s amazing the wires are so hard to remove, then only held on with slight pressure when newly installed.

They get stuck to the plug, the newer coils come with plenty of grease inside the boot to help prevent that, and I've seen a spec on certain docs for 1 gram of grease in each plug wire/coil boot, which is a lot really compared to what most people would use.
