5.5 Oil consumption

My 2012 E63 has 54k miles and I have had to add almost 1 1/2 quarts since the 50k service.
I can't imagine this is normal.

Anyone else have any oil consumption on their cars?
Debating to bring it into MB, I wonder if the CPO covers things like this?

How hard do you drive it... Many have added a quart between 5-10k oil changes

Is this a new development that you're adding oil or has it always been like this

Are you tuned?

I drive it fairly normal for am AMG. Just had a track day with the car 2 weeks ago, and do enjoy spirited acceleration from stop lights when M5 sedans are next to me.

I have only owned the car for 5 months and have put ~6k miles on it.

It is 100% stock tune, pipes, mufflers, etc.

If 1 qt per 10k miles is normal (assumed it wouldn't be with an AMG) then I think 2 quarts of fairly aggressive driving per 10k is ok.

Thoughts?

Couldn't agree more ... Track days = oil consumption

You're probably fine. I've read over and over again that this is pretty normal for Amg 6.3 and 5.5 engines

Thank god it's not as bad as the 750i v8 consumption... It's a quart of oil per city BLOCK

generally on amg's (and v8 turbo audis) 1L oil consumption per 1000miles is considered normal

my 5.5TT e63 does burn a little more oil than did my 6.3 n/a c63 and little more than my 5.5 s/c e55

also 0w-40 will be consumed at faster rate than 5w-40, but all of it occurs when the engine is cold when the viscosities are different (once warmed they are the same)

I'm assuming you mean 10,000 miles, not 1000. I drive the snot out of mine and so far zero oil consumption with M1 0W-40. I also drove my 2014 E550 very, very hard and zero oil consumption. IMO, engines become oil burners when they are broken-in too gently. The rings never develop a proper interface with the cylinder walls and the result is oil consumption and slightly reduced power for the life of the engine. The first 50 miles are critical. I have always broken-in my vehicle's engines aggressively and have never had an oil burner.

no , the official oil consumption guidance is a quart every 1000 miles, anything less than that is considered normal. some burn more, others burn less. Certain Audi and BMW cars’ standards state that a quart burned every 600 to 700 miles is reasonable.

This can be said for MB as well (especially amgs)---> “Oil consumption is normal on all engines,” BMW spokesman Hector Arellano-Belloc said in an e-mailed statement to consumer reports. “BMW vehicles have long intervals between oil changes (10,000 miles). BMW engines (excluding the BMW M) may consume up to one quart of engine oil per 750 miles under certain driving conditions.” He added that BMW’s M performance models may consume even more oil than that.

its been that way for a while for AMGs (audis too) and been discussed to death

Read that entire thread. 1 liter per 1000 miles is way too much in my experience. I think people are way too concerned about a really gentle break-in after dropping the bucks for these cars and end up hurting the engines. The extra admonitions on AMG cars about careful break-ins makes it worse on these cars.

i agree with a lot of it being caused by too careful break-in by people that bought the cars new and were initially scared by the power and breaking it and thus babying it during break-in.

but in the eyes of the manufacturer, its normal consumption and not cause for concern in terms of health of the car... juts a bit inefficient in oil use

I would be really bummed if my car used anywhere near that amount of oil. Anything more than a half quart every 5k or so for the first 100k would be quite disappointing. I routinely hammer at triple digit speeds and did so regularly with my E550 and literally never needed to add any oil.

Check your valve covers for leaks. I had mine done recently after I started adding a quart per 3-4k miles. It took taking the car apart to do my turboback downpipes to even know I was leaking oil. Garage floor was clean!

I have to add 2 quarts between every oil change. I just had my car checked for the head bolt issue. Did a pressure test and all the stuff and nothing is leaking. I want to install a catch can, to see how much of it is blow by, since the engine is so large and powerful. My 6.0L LS3 use to have a ton of blow by, but not 2 quarts per year/10k.

Breaking in as the OEM tells you is just a ticket to high oil consumption IMHO. Every BMW bike I buy, BREAKE it IN , never a drop of oil used. I bought a bike before a trip to the EU that lasted longer and I let my friend use it, he was really nice now it is the only bike that uses oil...
Have you ever seen an F! being eased in or use oil? granted they change it ever practice but they never are adding oil in the middle of the race... and an F1 race is proven to be more brutal than 10K on a NYC police car.

F1 engines consume 3-5L of oil during a race. (around 300Km or 186 miles)

Steve Manchett has said they have a "reserve" tank in addition to the dry sump that allows them to top up the dry sump tank. The driver has to control it since two way controls were banned.

also A typical Nextel Cup engine eats 1 quart per 100 miles. Very low ring drag.

I got lost in the translation and not thinking, but it is my understanding that 3-5L is the difference between low and normal. Although not an engine expert by any means I have been told many times by a couple of mechanics on different teams that if you were to "relate this to a nor mal car you would have to do 30-40K Kilometers before you add a L to a normal car, and about 20K Kilometers to a NYC police car. As they seat eating pastries all day long." but then I know less than you or either of the mechanics I get to interact with...

Comparing F1 engine oil consumption to that in an M157 doesn't seem very relevant. If the M157 redline was 15,000 and it put out anywhere near the HP/liter, then maybe. Apples to oranges. My Kawasaki ZX14R is a naturally aspirated 1.4 liter 4 cylinder that redlines at 11,500 and puts out 200 HP at the rear wheel (and weighs just over 500 lbs). I track it regularly and ride it extremely hard on the street and it uses zero oil.

Added 7 quarts in 2000 miles.

My 2012 Mi57 has a tune, cooling, downpipes, and exhaust from a reputable tuner in Florida. 605 HP and 705 TQ to the wheels. I drive pretty aggressive and always have my car in Sport+ with Traction off.

I've added 7 quarts of oil in 2000 miles. There is no oil leak on anywhere I park, but my exhaust is always black until its detailed.

Tuner believes its "blow by" due to my rings being too loose.

I'm working with my SA now and hopefully there gonna open her up and fix the problem, my car is still under warranty.

Anybody have to deal with this?

wow 7 quarts in 2k is a LOT!

I am up to 3 quarts now and almost at 9k miles...
And have another track day in 3 weeks, which will fore sure be another qt for a total of 4 quarts in 10k.

I used to add 1litre per 800-1000 km.
Mercedes claims that its normal to add 0.9litre per 1000 km.
Then I have moved to Petronas oil. No consumption any more.

Car was broken in far too gently...it will never be right. I've always done aggressive break-ins and I drive the dog **** out of all my vehicles. I NEVER need to add any oil between changes.

With that mentality every Toyota Prius/Honda Civic/etc would burn oil.
