Wider rear tires on stock wheels?

My rear tires need to be replaced and i'm wondering if I can go wider on the stock wheels. I'm going with Hankooks since the fronts are still good and i've been happy with them since i purchased the car. I'm thinking 295/30/19. anyone done this before?

The sidewall will bulge and distort slightly and it will round the contact patch so that normal tire psi will cause the center of the tread to wear slightly faster than the shoulders. But it does fit and it's not a big deal for a daily driver, just not ideal if you're wanting the most performance out of your tires.

This might actually be a good characteristic due to the factory default for AMG cars to wear inner shoulders first.

If you don't mind the sidewall and aren't looking for pure performance I'd agree.

isn't the sidewall of the 295's slightly beefier than the 285's?

yes and as mentioned above it will look a bit weird for the size of the wheel and also give slightly worse performance.

My go-to has always been the MPSS but the new RE-71R is on my radar now. That tire came up in another thread talking about the PS4 (MPSS replacement) and so far I like what I see.

+1 RE-71R has been sounding like a great tire, but at such a low treadwear max performance summer tire, might as well go r-compound and get proxies r888 and have way more grip

plus to run RE-71R on our cars either have to go 18 in rim or run 35 series on 19 in since they dont make our size in 30 series

are people saying the re-71r are more sticky than the MPSS PS4? I had high hopes for the mpss PS4 as my next summer tire replacement for the stock p-zeros

I would just refer to the post by gaspam above. Looks like there may be some hurdles involved with that tire on this platform. RE-71r does seem to be more aggressive (sticky) than the MPSS/PS4, but like he said you sacrifice things like the tire not lasting as long.

I will probably still buy MPSS' if I can find them when the time comes for new tires.

has anyone use michelin as3 in summer regions....they are well respected for all season, but im wondering since they have nice tread life and are nice performers and a decent price if they would be ok for regular southern calif driving

Contis

My go to tires on all my German cars I have and had were always Continentals. There seems to be a great match which might just be in my head.
Never been crazy about the stock P0s.
Anyone who has Continentals on their e63 4matic wagon?

If All Seasons are of interest, I will say go with either Continental DWS06, or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric. I have had good experiences with both tires.

I'm in Atlanta - almost purchased a set of the A/S 3+ this week. What stopped me was all the bad reviews about how noisy these tires are.

Gave in and got four new Pirelli Pzero (MO) spec in stock sizing. I figured why start messing with things until I get more time behind the wheel in this wagon.

Was advised against the Continentals by a high end tire shop. I've had two sets on other MBs in the past and always regretted getting them. Tires out of round or some other issue....try to stick with Michelin in most cases. Sad the MPSS is not made in the factory rear size.

I like Yokohama ADO8Rs, i got them in 295-30R19 size for the stock rear wheels. Better grip than the original P Zeros.

Conti's are actually really good tires, I run DW's on my car. Michelin PSS were prefered but as you stated, not available in OE size

Run AS3 on my passat tdi, good tire for that car, but not a tire I would consider for my wagon

If you want to widen your rear tires, you have to do the calculations of the new circumference and get a front tire that will the new circumferences to stay within OE spec. If not, you can possibly throw of the TCS

2006 SLK55, 2014 E63 Wagon
My 2014 E63S wagon came with the Continental SportContact5 as the OEM tires. I think they're a little noisier than the Michelin PSS, but the grip is good and certainly better than the Pirellis that I had previously on the SLK.

Also DW beats all other tires in the wet.

I was looking at replacing the OEM P Zero's with A/S 3+ since I live in the PNW. It snowed here recently and temps have been in the the 10's to 30's but the P Zeros handled fine for summer tires ( I know )

I don't need dedicated snow tires so A/S 3+ are the best bet. Other than that, I'd replace the OEM tires with the new MPS4's

New Michelin pilot sport a/s 3+ have been outperforming the top rated A/S tires in recent reviews.
