2014 E63 AMG S Model brake rotors
Hey gang, got a question, MrAMG sent me this way...
So I've come to the conclusion that I need a set of brake rotors for my 14 E63 S Model, and to my horror, I see MB wants something like $1500 A PIECE for the front rotors, I've seen them as low as $700, but still, it's a cast iron disk, not a carbon ceramic rotor... Is there seriously no other application for this part that they can justify that much for it's cost when the rears are less than $100?
At that price, Carbon Ceramic actually almost makes sense, heavy on the almost...
Any supplier help or wisdom is appreciated!

That price is for all 4 rotors, pads, SS replacement lines and fluid.

I recommend the Girodisc 2 piece rotors. The fronts are $1050 for the pair and the rears are $1300 for the pair. When you need to replace them the front rings will cost you $570 for the pair and the rear rotor rings will cost you $700 for th repair.

I was told the rears are more expensive because the rear hat has to be machined to handle the emergency brake. Basically, there's more work involved in making the rear hat, therefore, more $$$.

They say that there's no such thing as a dumb question, but there certainly are dumb answers!

I think RB also has that black-colored ?vapor-deposition on both the outside and inside so the rust wouldn't happen on non-friction surfaces. I wonder if GiroDisc has something similar to prevent the rust on the inside.
I have also read this on one of the threads not too long ago.

Girodisc all day long - read the "failure" reviews of RacingBrake - and the GiroDisc are made in the USA -
I had them on my 211 E63 wagon and loved them -

I agree that the Girodiscs are the best option for 2 piece brake replacement.

We put them on a lot of Porsches that are used for PCA track events and the owners are very happy with these brakes. The Girodiscs are thoroughly used by customers that race their cars and the results with those customers are great.

The Girodisc does retain the e-brake.
We have Project Mu make pads for us for these cars and they are, by far, the best performing pads for the street that are also dust free. We also have them on sale . Project Mu is a Japanese brake pad company but they are used by some of the most famous racing programs in the world. We obviously use a different compound but the quality of the pad sis second to none.

These current discussions in Camaro forum should be helpful to you in regard to two piece rotor upgrade, and more specifically rear two piece rotors.
How to make your Z28 rear CCM rotor lighter
This composite hat consists of 3 different components:
1. Hat shell is made of forged aluminum
2. The liner is made of cast iron, the correct material for drum brake like one piece rotor drum w/o warping
3. Fasteners that secure the iron ring to the aluminum shell
This hat assembly not only is stronger than iron rotor but retain 100% functionality of your rear emergency brake - Unlike other aftermarket rear light weight hat that are just machined from aluminum billet which can easily get scored if the parking brake is not released.
Yes, the hat is made fully compatible with OE carbon disc with simple and easy to assemble and disassemble hardware. The front hat is also available.
These composite hats and hardware are made exclusively for our carbon ceramic rotor assembly, not being sold separately. If you are interested we can make them available for purchase.

There are only 3 legitimate rear rotor hats, and here are their respective mechanical property.
Gray Iron Hat SAE G10 (scroll to page 60/97)
Tensile (min)=198 MPa =28,718 psi
RB Hat - Aluminum Alloy 6061-T6 w/iron sleeve
Tensile strength (yield)=276MPa=40,000 psi
Brembo OE Hat - 304 Stainless Steel
Tensile strength (yield)=215 MPa=31,200 psi
Note: OE Stainless steel hat is not the right material for braking like cast iron as it will warp under continuing use and high heat condition, but still is better than other aftermarket rear hats just machined from aluminum billet for "parking brake" this aluminum hat can easily get scored/damaged by the brake shoes due its low hardness compare to iron or stainless steel.

We first made our rear two piece rotor hats with solid iron for BMW M3, Corvette Z06, EVO 8/9 and Nissan 350Z etc. (like Brembo supplied for Nissan GTR rear - The only set up we have seen so far).
When we offered two piece rotors for Camaro5 SS in 2009, some owners (track) voiced for further weight reduction, so we started developing the composite hats, and CamaroSS was the first light weight rear two piece we made and shipped (same for G6 today)
Before release, these composite hats were tested in race track to slow down a customer's SS solely with his e-brake. Today the composite hat has become our standard for all the rear two piece rotors, regardless it's for iron or CCB rotor.
So when it comes to your rear rotor upgrade, make sure to check with your supplier if the rear hat is made for emergency brake, although their answer is typically "yes they are made for parking brake" but at least you know what you are getting.
RB is proud to be leading the industry with innovative and exclusive brake products for enthusiasts like you, and we love Camaro owners who we think to have better understanding, on the true value of the car (parts) than brand name, than other car communities.
