Timing Chain tensioner and Guides
well after I saw my friends BMW timing chain slip I decided it was time at 35k.
They found tensioners were bad replace all parts and O ringsnew guides. I was told that 2 o rings go bad causing coolant leak. I also had a leak on the passenger side intercooler. It was a hose. They did trans wet clutch adaption for all gears, loaded the latest update for the motor and trans. Car is totally updated with new software. They said the oil temp taking long to go into normal is ok. No issues.
Now after a hard drive sitting for 5-10 minutes and restart.. she is quiet ..no more rattling...

No sound what so ever...
It's be rattling for about 5k. oil changed did not help and why not have it fix since it was covered. First cold start I was not hearing anything it was not until it was warm and shutoff for 5-10 minutes I would hear it.
I was thinking it was just the passenger side but it was both that was failing.
My thinking on cold start the oil pressure would be higher and that made a difference.

Oh I meant for how many seconds after a warm start was the rattling happening? Mine only rattles for 2-3 seconds after a warm restart.

37 hr shift network outage...sorry
It would last about 2-3 seconds and that was normal to me. One evening a was really had on it for saw oil temp when to 227 and stayed for awhile 70 deg air temp. about 2 miles from home hwy I drove normal to being temps down. Oil only came down to 223 water was 199 ( 199-203 seem to be normal temp for me) pulled let it idea for about 3 minutes as I look over social networks. oil came down to 221. Shut off... Took out trash and water the plants and 10 minutes later I decided to turn her over again ( wish these car had a turbo timer) to circulate the oil. Key on oil temp was 218 started rattle for about 5-6 second..longest ever. Next morning normal start... hard drive 5-6.....I then went on a 1200 miles trip and would hit gas after warm start to bring oil pressure up to stop the rattle.
I notice on cold start the car sound is different now.. ( even my mother said it sound much quieter) Since both adjuster was trash, I am thinking the ECU was pulling timing. If you have a rattle have it service.. plus you will have new coolant O rings which SA said is a common failure as part of the job, an oil change and new coolant.

I got annoyed with the cacophonous rattle of the timing chain on warm starts, even though it lasted maybe 5 seconds at most. I showed the dealer and they replaced the tensioners, installed check valves, and they also replaced a leaky left turbo bypass pipe and replaced the coolant. No idea the cost, it was covered under CPO warranty.
Now the car has harmonious grunts and breaths of life on a warm start that was impossible to hear before due to the rattling.

I've also read people with m157 and m276 (4.6ttv8??) from 550 having this work done only for it to recur after a few months

Yeah that sounds like the rattle I used to have. Mine lasted longer than that though, up to 5 seconds. After the fix haven't heard it at all, cold or warm start. On my cold start this morning, it sounded like a peaceful quiet warm start. I had to glance at the tach to makes sure the engine was revving over 1000rpm and that it wasn't idling low because it sounded different.
If it comes back then oh well, I guess.
