My friend 14 E550 had a misfire and was told its the head. New head last year car is good. Same thing again but the other head this time. New head and all is good. I went to pick up the car with him and the tech said it was a build up that stop the valve come closing.
550 has 62k well cared for and no cheap gas and oil change at 6-7k. He is the first owner.
Our AMGs are DI and wondering if our cars AMG or not might have the same issues down the road. I am at 42k now.. I try to WOT every drive if possible. My friend drive his as a DD. So far he has seem improved MPG and it has more power and very quiet...
Is there a way to run a cleaning solution in the air way to clean the valves or prevent this from happeneing. Audi BMW VW all seem to have this problem Ford Eco Boost seem to be the best at ID and no build up according to a list of manufacturers i found.
Why did they not do a Walnut cleaning like BMW seems to push down my throat every few miles? (yes grossly exaggerating since I've only done it twice in the last 10 or so years lol)
they said the valves were not sealing and a new head was needed. I told him he should push for both heads but they will only replace what was damage..1 Yr later the second head.
Could the build up be that bad where the carbon damage the valve seat...Or prevent the valve from closing....
I look at a 52k Mini cooper supercharge and it was super clean. I took a look at his intake pipes and no oil.. I even pulled my pipe off and no sign of oil.
I will suggest I drive it once a week for some WOT...:-)
I had carbon buildup on a 2007 BMW 335i that was a result of direct injection. By design, traditional carbon cleaning products (seafoam etc) don't work with direct injection. A catch-can can help, but walnut blasting is, as far as I know, the only method of cleaning the valve seat. Redlining the engine periodically to "blow off the carbon" really does help, as does fuel choice.
Alternative to walnut blasting, https://www.bgprod.com/services/gaso...air-induction/
I have no experience with this product but from what I can see, either you spray valve cleaner directly into the throttle body at operating temperature which may or may not do much, or you run the car to operating temperature, then get access to the intake valves and clean them with a brush and their cleaning solution. My biturbo has 97k miles and I am sure I have lost some horsepower due to carbon build up but no issues related to direct injection.
Hey I was told I failed digital compression needs new heads. Took car back did manual and leakdown on cylinder misfiring (and 3 others for comparison) and the cylinder was fine. It was a cracked manifold as it is plastic and sits in the V. Since the manifold was off I did walnut blast but had to make an adapter (cardboard, hot glue gun, weather seal) for my BMW N54 vacuum adapter. They looked bad. Since I was doing manifold I did all the vacuum lines and crank case breathing lines since they are plastic too.

109,000 miles, yes it is, but if you look at the internals they look brand new. Luxury cars need direct AND port or charge pipe injection to get fuel wash over the valves under WOT and the problem would be solved.

As a N54 owner myself back in the day, i know that with 106K miles on the M278, that carbon is alot better than a N54 would have looked like, there is progression, but of course not enough.
This is very good information for the community as i know alot of dealers and DIY's use xentry compression as a be all end all, as a valve guide failure. Esp since the internal benz bulletin is out about this issue.
Where exactly did your plastic intake manifold crack? Care to share some pictures.
Thanks
So at the bottom where it sits in the V it popped out out the right side when looking in. But the TSB campaign calls for borescoping and a leakdown test. If manual compression and leakdown are good, you maybe need to look elsewhere.
