Intake Install on My 2015
Hey Guys,
I know there is another thread regarding the UPD kits that I believe Shardul started (I bought mine from him btw) but it is sooo long at this point I wasn't so sure that what I wanted you guys to see would not be missed.
Basically, I took all the best tips from the other thread together with one new one of my own for an optimized install. For example, I used the ECU spacers that Stereolab suggested to get the ECU to look correct. My new offering is regarding the red anodized spacer frame. As you all know, most of us would have preferred this piece to be black. So I actually paid a local plating shop $100 to strip the red anodize and re-anodize them black (see pics below). They came out perfect!
So below you will see kind of a step-by-step of the install that may be of some help to folks not familiar with this yet.
Red Ano
Black Ano
Engine Before Starting
Engine With the 3 covers removed
Paper tube disconnected
Airbox exhaust tube disconnected
Engine without covers and airboxes
Original airbox assembly removed
Removal of stock screws in the bottom side of the airbox
Installation of the new longer screws with their spacers
Installation of new main spacer and new filter
Completed airbox assembly with UPD kit installed
Side-by-side of airboxes before and after
Installation of riser spacer to lift up small covers
ECU with new McMaster-Carr spacers. This raises the ECU to look correct with the higher cover
Closeup of new box on the engine
Project finished! With the black spacers, it is pretty difficult for anybody to see this modification. If they really are looking they will find it. But even then it is doubtful that the dealer would make any type of stink about it.

Looks awesome! Where did you get the risers for the ecu lift?
for those who painted it did you use a high temp engine/brake caliper black paint?

Great detail write up OP. Would you mind sharing the link for the McMaster-Carr parts so that we don’t make a mistake in ordering them. Much appreciate it.

I bought the standoff’s from the company posted came to 42 bucks, they really should include them to really complete the UPD kit , this is what actually stopped me from buying the UPD kit was the look of the recessed ECU

This, absolutely. Can't believe they don't offer the the spacer in black and include the required standoffs, not like they haven't gotten enough feedback at this point. Nothing I hate more than ordering brand new parts, only to have to modify it and buy separate pieces to complete a proper install. Happens in the motorcycle world all the time, big pet peeve of mine.

he has this installed before his ams tune ... but then again he has his oem ecu as well so would be interesting to see if the spacers make a seat of your pants gain

I bought my frame directly from UPD in the black color. Do they not offer this anymore? If not, it's a shame, with black (and the ECU risers) it looks completely stealth. The smog guy is going to have to get up pretty early in the morning to detect this methinks...

I have the stock ECU in it currently. Since I fully benchmarked the stock performance (for comparison to the tune later) I could take a couple of pulls on my favorite stretch and see if anything looks different. I will let you guys know.
