M157 oil leak (Timing Cover)

I have noticed a leak coming from my timing cover area

ive replaced all camshaft positioning sensors

can anyone point me towards a diagram or instructions to fix this leak? google doesnt have much answers for these m157 engines and I rather not go to a dealer for what could possibly be a simple repair

Why has this not become a class action lawsuit?

I had a fairly decent oil leak coming from the front of the engine and feared it was the timing cover, turned out it was the oil filter housing thermostat plug oring. Ended changing out the waterpump, turbo coolant lines and oil cooler gasket while I was there. Timing cover is tough because the head overlaps on top and oil pan on bottom. I would degrease and inspect closely before diving into a timing cover reseal...

@a1bray I’m actually glad you posted here even this is an older post as I seem to also have a slight oil leak on my passenger side by the timing cover that I’m trying to diagnose.

Some photos attached - can see some slight oil showing on the alternator and on the passenger side turbo rear side. Also some oil showing where the oil sensor plugs in.

. I am getting this looked at by the dealer as I’m also hearing a very slight rattle by the passenger turbo only when the car is fully warmed up and been driven for a period. The noise is not noticeable on startup and when motor is still warming up.

am hoping it’s a line or timing cover leak and not a turbo issue…..would welcome any feedback if your or others have experienced this?

@Yakatak will do…curious, do you also have that same rattle on left passenger side when warmed up?

Nope...Thankfully I have no unusual engine bay noises. You might want to do a search re: waste gate actuator rattle caused by a failed vacuum pump check valve. Cheap, easy fix.

thx yes found a couple of those waste gate actuator threads but none mentioned oil leaking with those issues, just the slight rattle noise. Will report back after the dealer checks it out

Any follow up on this? I have a slight leak towards the rear of the engine similar to the pictures you posted. It’s pretty minor but annoying since it’ll leave an oil spot on the garage floor if sitting for a few days.

@Treehouse was pretty disappointed with the dealer (fletcher jones chicago MB) they initially said they didnt see anything leaking and there was no issue. i sent them the photos and they came back saying the front timing cover was leaking ($3500 to repair) which I think is incorrect as they didnt do a full inspection with removing the intakes or underside panels to get a detailed view.

i've not been driving the car much since its not my daily.... I dont see any oil coming from the front cover but I'm going check it myself one more time from underneath and top with the air boxes removed and belt removed before taking it to my indy guy to get his opinion. when my front diff was leaking i had oil in a similar spot so perhaps thats it. not sure

I’ll dig into it too and I’ll report back if I find anything. I’m a DIY guy but I might end up taking it to a local Indy to at least diagnose.
