e63 Wagon 2012
e63 rough downshift to 1st gear
I have a 2012 e63 wagon. I purchased it used. When running in sport mode I'm experiencing a rough downshift to 1st gear at about 8 mph (i.e. slowing down in heavy freeway traffic). I would expect the shirt to 1st would come at or near a stop, not 8 mph. I don't think the car always did this. Had dealer look at this while under extended warranty. After several days they said they changed some programming but no real change. Does your e63 shift down to 1st at 8 mph? Thank you.

Mine sometimes does. The general consensus from these forums seems to be that sometimes the MCT can be a little rough. I have some terrible downshifts from 3rd to 2nd too, particularly when coming up to lights and the oil is cold.

This is pretty common for the MCT.. Mostly due to the clutches.. Hence why Comfort doesnt use first gear, and why the trans default to 2nd gear in any trans setting if the oil temps are cold.

This is UNcommon for the MCT and therefore abnormal on the whole; that being said there are years of posts of people describing harsh shifting into first gear on many different benz models particularly outfitted with the 7gtronic, of which the mct in the e63 is a variation of the 7gtronic
reset the tcu; likely the dealer already did this.
if that doesn't work then it could be your valve body or clutch packs and this will therefore require more transmission work on the hardware end, not the software end.

I find mine downshifts in the same manner.
I need to find some other E63's and test drive them so I can compare to something.

Its definitely a little jerky going from 2nd to 1st in my 2016. Car was updated with latest software in April.
When I end-up in alot of start and stop traffic, or when i'm driving in NYC or somewhere with alot of traffic lights, I switch the transmission control to comfort. Then you have to manually turn off the ECO mode.

The op is talking about 2nd to 1st downshift... That small jerk is the MCT clutch locking up into the low 1st gear.. Ive driven many many MCT trans by now, They all seem exhibit this behavior.

I only drive in S or S+ and I always have a silky smooth downshift to 1st gear when slowing down to a stop

To be fair, i have learned how to modulate the throttle in anticipation for that 2nd to 1st shift.

Did the update make a difference?
Also, I have noticed that the downshifts depend on how I have been driving. More aggressive driving = more aggressive shifts. Cold is always the worst. Also, as stated, I run comfort (eco) with stop/start disabled when I am going to be in traffic.
You all know what these are like, warm, manual mode after aggressive driving, gosh what a glorious car.
