Should I purchase a '14 AMG Wagon or am I out of my mind?

I have the opportunity to purchase a certified pre-owned '14 E63S Wagon with 25k miles. White on Black, full options, $109k original sticker. Car looks mint, Texas/Florida car. I'm having a pre-purchase inspection done on it shortly. The car I would be flipping for it would be a '03 Porsche 996 Turbo. The Turbo has 21k miles on it. The 996 Turbo really doesn't have much to go wrong with it that hasn't already been addressed. Minor quibbles, electrical is almost non-existent since doesn't really have any tech. The E63S has a certified pre-owned warranty for 1 year (since the original warranty is out at this point) with unlimited miles. My concern is that after one year, the repair bills will start adding up on it. There is an additional 2 year extended warranty I can purchase through Mercedes for $5k. The draw to the E63 is simply the fact that it's such a perfect daily driver. Much better than my 996 of course.

Those of you that have these or have had them - any words of advice? Should I run far away?

LOL I don't think anyone in the E63 forum is gonna say "run far away". You are preaching the choir".

That means you are presenting an argument or opinion to people who already agree with it.

I guess - am I crazy for wanting to give up my 996 turbo for one of these?

Sure Porsche-philes will say you crazy but I can only assume you shopping for a E63s in a wagon because you need things it offers ie seating, space, cargo.

It really depends what you personally value more. Market has spoken, and the market value is equivalent. So you differentiate on things important to you. You mentioned daily driving comfort and maintenance costs. I think the E63 is hands-down winner on the former category. The maintenance costs is probably similar, however, the 996T is much older tech and production meaning more aged components and approaching replacements. For example, rubber (seals, hoses), plastic, paint, even body parts deteriorate with age. Unless you are firmly a Porsche zealot, you will enjoy the E63 very much.

They have totally different missions in life. If your life’s priority changed and you need a wagon, then it’s a no brained. Many of my YouTube channel reviewers claim the wagon the best Overall car for a reason. It’s just a cool P-car.

If you decide to pass on the wagon, send me a link to it. I’m looking.

This is funny... I offloaded my 996 turbo for my 14 e63s a few years ago. I've since gotten rid of my E and miss it WAY more than I miss the porsche. I'm far more into modern tech and creature comforts than how quickly I can go around a 360 off ramp these days.

Depends on how much the wagon is and how much the 996 is selling for. I know the wagon guys are going to skewer me for suggesting this but why not an 18’ GLC 63 that may serve the same function and have the updated interior and tech? Low 60’s on the CPO site.

I've got a '14, and couldn't be happier. 180 degree different car than a 996 Turbo, though. If you want to keep a low profile with fantastic performance, the wagon is perfect. If you want your neighbors to ogle and drool over your car, it's likely not, unless you have a bunch of car fanatics in your 'hood.

Yes
I have had my car for three possibly four years and has given me a very very little trouble, it is the coolest car on the road one of the fastest and cheap At half the price Compared to most other supercars, if you like the bling factor every day somebody gives me the thumbs up or some kind of Waze saying how cool my car is. Good luck and hope to see you out there on the freeway be safe

I'd say go for it!!! I've had my '16 S-AMG black wagon for less than a year and I absolutely love it. Now I've had my fair share of rides over the years (M5, 2 different Audi S4's, WRX, 3 series BMW twin turbo diesel...the list goes on & on. I had a few warranty things done that were minor since purchase and I had to replace my front & rear brake pads/rotors (I'm sure previous owner was a heavy brake'r). Other than that it has been the best car I have owned (driving, acceleration, styling, etc.). MY 2002 M5 used to be my favorite, but this car won me over after the first drive. It is such a sleeper too. I have roof racks on top and just the other day I loaded a 50 inch tv (in box) home from Best Buy with no issues. I even had my 7 year old in his car seat to boot with the tv in the rear! It is so practical for all that most people will ever need. I have never owned a Porsche let alone driven one so I can't speak to your decision there, but definitely spend some time sitting in and driving the one you are looking to buy and I'm sure you will be won over like we all here were. Good luck in your mission!!

I went from a 2010 Corvette ZR1 to a 2014 E63 amg. Found one used with 15K on the clock two months ago, it had the original (dry rotting) tires on it!

I love the car. While I do miss driving the ZR1, the E63 is just so much more comfortable and now that I am tuning it, it is quite fast in its own right.

Life is short, enjoy many different cars as possible!

Get rid of the 996. Get the E63S. If you miss the Porsche experience, buy a Cayman to go with the wagon. The 996 is easily the worst 911 ever made by both P-car fanboys and non-fanboys.

On my 4rd AMG - 2004 E55 & 2009 E63 Wagon gone - current 2018 C63S & 2014 E63S wagon and am in love with my wagon - have owned it for 3 years now - has 34K on the clock and has been great in terms of reliability. I live in the Silicon Valley and Ferrari/McLaren/Lambos are common - i have only seen 1 or 2 other AMG wagons in the last few months. Like all the others have said - totally understated - mine is lowered on 20" wheels + tuned + resonators deleted so under WOT off the line it does sound great and i get thumbs up from boy racers as well as others rolling the high end Italian's. Gotta love a wagon that is straight line capable and has 750 AWD HP!!!!

I'd try keep both as PCars just continue to go up in value.

Best line ever was: "Do you the only thing faster than an AMG? Depreciation on a AMG!!!" Guessing a 14 with 24K miles is $58K-$62K?
