sounds like you are a bit defensive that the performance is so close. If i were doing a build today based on this platform. I would definitely consider the 278. They have lower miles often, not driven as hard, cheaper, and it sounds like performance that makes the 157 guys a bit nervous. You have to work harder of course. The amg is just really nicely tuned out of the box and im sure brabus is even better.
both platforms are very close because of the way they have to put down the power. Even if you got 1400 hp out of a 157 and only 1000 or 950 out of a 278 i believe you have to limit the torque to the same levels for the transmission. I think they would both be 10.5 at best. I might be wrong though.
as a direct response to longevity. I have heard both the engines can safely do like 800-900hp. But i haven’t looked at any long term modeling or have good data to back that up. So i’d love to hear other opinions about that.

M278 is about 20% small in displacement vs M157, but has 0.5 higher compression ratio, so I should be able to make at least 80% of the power the M157 makes.

As a new owner of the E550 biturbo - I'm interested in tuning it as well. Are there any issues that result from it? I'm very new to tuning. I heard a story about the transmission or the torque converted not being able to handle increased performance after a tune in an Audi. Is that a possibility with an E550?

these cars have been fairly reliable for most. there are some issues with early 2012 cars, but MB fixed the issues and most are good. No horror stories for transmissions, but conside a TCU(Transmission Control Unit) tune right out of the gate, after you've performed all maintenance the car is in need of. The E550 can make some serious power when tuned. A ECU/TCU tuned 550 with catless exhaust is as fast as an E63S(high 11's).
You will be ok as long as you go with a reputable tuner, Mercedes really beefs up the drive trains and of course maintenance is a big part of modifying.
Yeah, pretty close, depending on who takes off first.
I ran 12.0 without a TCU tune and high 11's(11.7) on 93 with a stage 2 ECU tune and a TCU tune. With my other mods and custom "Stage 3+ Secret-Squirrel" tune, I run low 11's.
Performance is there, you just gotta know how to find it...
how do I run low 11s on an awd e550? And what do u mean stage 2 ecu ? Don’t u need downpipes to run stage 2 ?
I think it has more to do with the way the turbo housing and exhaust manifold are designed. The first cylinder on each head feeds an individual passage to the turbo housing and the remaining 3 cylinders merge together in the manifold and feed a different portion of the turbo housing. I believe that, coupled with the front cylinders being farthest away from the throttle body work in conjunction to keep the front 2 Cyl more lean and hotter than the other cylinders. But, that's just a guess...
I'm tuned, have stock turbos and I do NOT use meth and I'm faster than a stock E63S. Iean, it's technically a custon "race gas" tune, definitely not "off the shelf", but still, here I am!

wait so what is everything u recommend I get I order to see low 11s on a e550? Does tcu tune completely void warranty ?
Hey everyone, first time posting on this form, I currently have a 2014 Mercedes E550 biturbo with about 40k miles on it currently, I recently got it tuned to AMG performance with stock power at 408hp and 443lbs of torque, I got it stage 1 tuned up to about 510hp and 630lbs of torque (850nm) and wow does it pull😍 I’ve taken a couple of amgs and bmw M sports off the line. Did not have to do any crazy upgrades for my car as the tuner said my breaks were already good enough for the power, but I he did recconmend performance air filters which I purchased K&N ones. Don’t have any 0-60 times yet or any videos but will get some
soon! Went with an Eagle eye ECU, they have a local dealer in my city and only costed about $650 Canadian for the whole thing! This is the power upgrades for the E550
My question is how could I possibly make it the car perform even more well or what other perfomace upgrades can I do to make my car the best that it can be. Thanks!

I thought my 2012 550 coupe had around 447 nm torque standard. Says here it has 600...and $650 for a tune is awesome. Where in Toronto are you?
