Upgraded 722.9 Output shaft info
After a lot of research and phone calls all over north America, I spoke to Eddie at Southern Hotrod Transmissions (http://www.southernhotrod.com) who said he is willing to produce them if we have 25 interested buyers. He already makes upgraded shafts in house for the 722.6 transmission that are currently holding 1400hp. The issue with the 722.9 shafts is that there is a planetary gearset friction welded to the end as you can see in the picture above, so every other shop I spoke to was unwilling to even attempt production of an upgraded part. An upgraded shaft will REQUIRE YOUR old broken (or not) shaft so the planetary gearset can be swapped over as those parts are not available anywhere other than to the OE shaft manufacturer. So if yours is broken DO NOT THROW THE OLD ONE AWAY!!
This is not a pre-order or group buy. He wants to see 25 serious interested buyers with broken shafts or willing to buy an upgraded one to start development of the new part. No one else in the world that I have found is producing or willing to produce this part. With the big turbo, built and sleeved M157's coming stateside very soon (including mine
) I'm hoping to get ahead of the development curve on the next part in line to break. There have been quite a few members talking about these breaking in various posts across the forum so if we can compile them here it may be helpful.Shoot an email to support@southernhotrod.com with your interest in the product and any pics of broken ones you have and it will help get the ball rolling on this

Spoke with Eddie just now and he told me that he will try to keep the price around $1,250 if possible, but that it could be $2k or possibly a little more, depending on how the process goes during development of the shaft. Like TECHNICIAN said, you must send either your old shaft, or a new shaft to have the part made as the Stock MB planetary carrier must be welded to the new shaft. For info on the process, it will be the same process as the input shaft for the 722.6(300m, vacuum hardened, etc. )that is available on their website. He also stressed that this will be a prototype part and their are no guarantees that it will work and not break/twist, but if there is any issue with their part, they will make it right, but it may take time due to having to be re-engineered.
For the best chance of having this done, EVERYONE who is interested should email him at the address above with your contact info, year, make, model and if possible, your transmission designation number(277.9xx).
joking intersting +1 to have it tested.
