I have always bought Michelin Pilot Sports A/S 3's for all my cars and with the recent set put on my W210 E55. about 2 years ago. I live in KY where the winters are pretty mild with just few days of snow here and there. Anyways with the recent A/S 3's, I had terrible time balancing them and ended up getting 2 replaced for out of roundness too. Even after that, I am still not happy with them

Fast forward, with my recent purchase of this wagen 9 months ago, it came with the A/S 3's and though they needed replacement, I was still not happy with them. with not many good all seasons out in the market, I decided to go with summer performance tires instead. One of the members was selling his HRE's with barely used MSS so I bit the bullet and bought the set.

Dealing with Mrharris 964 was pleasure and the transaction went uneventful- thanks.

The set was flawless with tires in excellent shape with NAD.

Now lets get back to the point.

Michelin A/S3's:

Noisy, harsh and bumpy

Michelin PSS:

Relatively softer, much quitter, rides very smooth and OMG, are they sticky, well sicky is not the right word. The steering feels so much more direct and responsive now. Going forward, all my cars going to get the summer tires with one car with dedicated winter or all season tires.

What ever i buy, it definitely won't be the POS A/S 3's, for sure.

 

I have the PSS and with 900/1000 I now need p4S

 

900/1000? Miles front and rear?

Can't comment between the PSS vs PS4, but the car needs designated summer and an all season/winter tires for the winters, that's what i meant?

I'm a cheap bastid - those A/S3+ might be crap but they're round and they bounce so until I get out of stock HP hell I'll be riding them year round!

 

You won't miss what you haven't tried yet. For some the ride quality matters the most and for that, we like to have designated summer/winter tires.

 

All season tires are no season tires.

Michelin PSS or a variation of for the summer. If a daily driver in the winter, switch to Bridgestone Blizzaks then.

 

Any thoughts on trying the new Michelin AS4 tire? Getting great reviews. OEM for the C8 Vette (All-season option).

I put a set on my RX-7 (as a back up set on the OEM wheels) and am very happy with them. VERY quiet. Super predictable. Hooks up nicely. Have not tried them yet in the rain or cooler temps. No plans on using them in the winter.

But based on my limited experience and reviews will have no issues putting them on my wife's X3 and my E63s when the Pirellis need replacement. FWIW we put winter tires on all of our vehicles, but to avoid getting caught in an early snow storm, late snow I find that I am swapping the winter tires on a bit earlier than needed, and keep them on a month longer than necessary. I swap my tires back to summer tires sooner as I have a Jeep (that also runs winter tires) can use if the snow shows up.

I do not track my E63 and it is primarily a winter car, but I do enjoy putting the foot to the floor and expect that the E63 will hook up with the Michelin AS4.

 

I currently run the Michelin PS4S tires and they provide EXCEPTIONAL grip even in 40F cold temps in Chicago which was the temperature when I ran a 10.42 (per Dragy and was dry road surface) on my 15 E63S. I dont daily my car or have a 2nd set of winter tires, but as long as the road surface is dry I do occasionally drive with the PS4S tires even if the temps are 20-30F but have to be very careful obviously.

My car came with Pirelli PZero's which would wheel hop terribly when the temps dipped to 40F range and those just spun even in warmer weather so I'll never buy another set of Pirellis again.

I did have Michelin AS/3 tires and didnt have any complains on them. The ride was comfortable and much softer compared to the PS4S yet they still hooked pretty decent.... although nothing like the PS4S.

 

Good luck finding some in the right size. I was told Michelin isn't planning on making the 285/30R19 this year at all.

 

Good call, I checked sizes for my other vehicles and they had them. Assumed (my fault) that they would be present for the E63. I won't be shopping for the E63 for a year or 2 fortunately.

I have seen on other posts of guys taking some pretty negative swipes at all-season tires. While I do agree summer tires will outperform all-season tires in many conditions (even chilly weather), the problem is when you drive the car in winter in an area where it is below freezing in the winter. The compound stiffens up on summer tires and it can be at risk of cracking, chunks being torn out, and other damage due to the tires losing their flexibility. Snow tires are another option, but if it is cold and dry in the winter (only occasional small snows), the all seasons may be the best option in winter for overall performance. I would never drive my E63 in heavy snow, even if I had snow tires. It would become a plow after a couple of inches of snow anyway!

This is probably the exact way to think about this if you're driving anywhere near these cars' capabilities... which generally I am not, which is why I use the all-season Contis (+ wet weather performance)... of course I get wheel hop on a dry, sunny 85* day if I hit it from a stop... but that doesn't happen too often.

For me, this has always been a choice about driving habits and preferences. I also have a dedicated winter car... so that helps.

I want all that garage space! Living in Wyoming with real winter (300+ inches per year) traction of a different sort is what matters. LOL. Last year I was too lazy to get the snows on and made it through the winter with the AS3. They did pretty darn well. I was surprised. There were some days I didn't bother trying to go out, but that was more a clearance issue. And, they can handle dirt roads when needed. All that said, I am sure I'd be happier with the 4S in Summer :-)
