Changing spark plugs today when I noticed oil in the coil pack, corrosion on the bottom it. But there was no oil on the spark plug. Could oil have traveled from the cam gear cover sensor to the coil pack?
looks like this oil is on the harness side of the pack so I would inspect immediately. If you are not in warranty it is not a huge pain to clean everything but you will have to do it a few times. just takes lots of electronics cleaner and of course replacement of any sensors or magnets causing the issue up front. Had oil to my ecu and was able to clean it all very well.
I would pull the harness plugs at those eight sensors and see which is wet and that will tell you where to start. You can also pull the ecu connection so you can see if oil has travelled that far.
Of course follow the directions on the cleaners and disconnect batteries as needed. don't activate anything wet with cleaner.
I pulled the connector out that is on the cam cover. It's in the same wire bundle, it had oil in it so I suspect it's coming from there. I took it out and the rubber seal looks good. I'll probably just order an new one then periodically check the spark plug connecters. Same harness in the first of this thread I found. https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...e-harness.html
Yes, the cam position sensors fail and leak oil into the connector pins. The oil wicks via capillary action into the harness-side contacts and into the wire. Then inside the wire to the ECU (and coil packs and O2 sensors).
It can cause misfiring and CEL, but not always.
The solution is to replace all 4 cam position sensors, all 4 cam magnets and clean the harness connectors with CRC contact cleaner.
Also separate the ECU connector and inspect for oil, clean using CRC if necessary. If caught soon enough, ECU replacement is not necessary. If the harness is saturated with oil, the harness needs to be replaced.
So as stated above included with what I stated please do all that we said. Clean up the WHOLE harness now. I had nowhere near that amount of oil travel. You will wind up with a totaled car if you don’t... and from the looks of it, you already are killing components. I did not have one component issue or misfire and it needed a ton of cleaning. Yours will surely need more... it takes a ton of oil to move to puddle in a connector like that.

After reading your guys post I went and looked at all the sensors today for cams and everyone had oil in it. Not much but it was there. I also checked the ECU and eight pins on the big connector had oil on them. Going to replace all the sensors and clean the connectors with contact cleaner. Thanks to everyone who responded.
Get a few (more than two cans). It goes fast. You will want to spray each connector and as much of the wires (oil travel in the individual wire strands through capillary action) and loom till the dripping fluid runs clear, working around the harness a few different times. Fortunately it’s only a few hundred bucks if diy. This is where fcp is the best for parts.
