Cam Sensor Replacement as Maintenance Item

Came across this video today

Certainly a topic that has been discussed on here . Based on what this guy is saying (Changing the cam sensors ~40K miles)... might not be the worst idea.

I can see checking the connectors for oil as a regular maintenance item. Replacing sensors and magnets that aren't leaking is preventive, but imo not strictly necessary.

Who is a good source for a used ECU and cloning? I saw a vendor on eBay and wanted find someone reputable to buy and clone from. I just found oil in my harness from cam sensors and ordered a new harness. I think I should probably look at getting a cloned ECU just in case.

Working through it myself with a friend. The driver side intake solenoid requires the oil filter housing to come out which is now turning into replacing the belt, tensioners, water pump, thermostat, coolant lines to the turbos and coolant hoses. May as well while we are in there and I’ve got 108k so it makes sense. It’s going to take a while to get it done. Not sure if there is anything else that should be done while I’m in there.

Im going to monitor the ecu harness for oil and see if it needs to be replaced. It looks like it can be done with the engine in place but it’s labor intensive. I’m hoping that the harness is salvageable as I found it by happenstance and not due to any codes or a check engine light. I picked up another harness just in case. Given supply chain issues, some factory parts aren’t easy to find at the moment.

I’ve been told by a couple independent mb mechanics and my local dealership that once oil gets in the only way to get it fixed is to replace the harness and all said the engine would need to come out.

not sure if they are just going off manual to get more money. Dealership quoted about $7.6k

mostly due to labor.

I would imagine pulling the motor would be the best way. I’ll have to take a closer look to see. I’m hoping there isn’t significant oil in the harness - time will tell.

I just got work done on the car from a local Benz specialist and I mentioned about the oil residue I’m starting to get on ecu. He mentioned some owners use a vacuum to suck the oil out of the socket. I was skeptical but gave it a shot today since and got some good results. Good tip for those who have this problem.

I used a white paper towel as “catch screen” between the shop vac and ecu socket

That's a great idea and worth trying!
