Carbon Ceramic brakes weight vs Steel brakes---- Verdict is in

Prior to purchasing the Ceramic brakes, I googled and Googled and googled about their weight differences but no one has made any posts regarding that, so here it is.
Both brakes were off 2014 E63s wagons with around 45K miles.

Calipers were loaded with the brake pads and the brake line.

Steel----------------------------------- Carbon:

Front Calipers: 17.6 lbs------------ --------21.6 lbs
Front rotors: 29.8 lbs ------------------------17 lbs

Total Front : 47.4 lbs -------------------------38 lbs

Rear Calipers: 8.8 lbs------------------------ 9.3 lbs.
Rear rotors: 24.2 lbs. ------------------------13.9 lbs.

Total rear 33 lbs. ------------------------------23.2 lbs

Verdict:

Front brakes lose 10 lbs each corner
Rear brakes lose 10 lbs each corner as well

So one loses at least 40 lbs of rotational mass which sounds pretty significant considering the new ceramic rotors sizes.

Hope this helps.

I wonder with bigger rotors and with bigger clamping forces, do Mercedes uses a different brake master cylinder or some like that?

I have a track day coming up.
Fastest stock I could ever manage was 11.6 @ 123 with no spare tire or sub.
We will see!

I think that is actually 23.1 lbs. of rotational mass,...unless your brakes work a lot differently than mine.

How come? The guy lost 10+ lbs each corner, you thinking just front?

Only the rotors have "rotational" mass...Hopefully.

Carbon calipers are heavier actually so the rotational loss is even more, the total loss is 40 lbs because the adding of mass from the calipers so really it's 44 pounds of rotational mass lost.

Rotational mass and Unsprung mass are two different things but related depending on what performance metric you're talking about

Rotational mass : Wheels/tires and rotors
Unrotational: Calipers and other parts not attached to springs

Unsprung mass = rotational + Unrotational mass.

Rotational deals with the acceleration and unsprung with the handling and turning.

For car to feel and handle good, lowering the unsprung weight is the key.

There's a guy on Instagram that sells Carbon Ceramic rotors that works with factory calipers.

Not bad if it's true ceramics, but the surface area looks considerably smaller though.

They are true Carbon Ceramic rotors, they've done a few AMG cars already. They are spec to work with factory non-carbon ceramic calipers.

All you have to do is bolt them on and paint the calipers copper to get the CCB look.

I believe they're somewhere around $8,600 all around with pads. Fronts $4,500 w/ pads.

I'll probably order a kit once my steel rotors need replacements.

If you're from the DC area, and go to Katie's C&C a fair amount, you'll know his Jeep and Caddy. The attention to detail is amazing. The Jeep is 900+whp, all about lightweight mods inside. It's incredible sounding and awesome to hear. Insanely fast.

For around 9 grand, you could easily pick up a used set of whole CCB package ( calipers/rotors/shields) and don't need to compromise on smaller brakes and being a poser with painting the calipers gold either. At $8400/rotors, that ain't cheap for sure.

Good luck finding a full mint set with low miles for $9K lol Those are unicorn type deals that maybe pop up every once every 10 years. New complete sets are $20K+.

Most of the weight savings come from the Carbon rotors anyways and you'll get even more weight savings with factory calipers.
