ECU went bad

ECU went bad

A friend of mine has problem to start the car. The steering and transmission are locked. The tech told him that his ECU is bad and he will need a different one. If he buy an used one off Ebay, does it need to reprogram at the dealer or just plug and play? Anyone know. It's stock, not performance ECU of anything like that. Thanks.

Question is - why did it go bad? Oil in the wiring harness? If so... new ecu will go bad too

yes you can get eBay ecu and tuner can clone it; dealer likely will not do this for you, they will sell you a new one

Oh, it's not M157 car so it's not the oil leak on wiring harness. . It's just an old 2008 E350. So he will need a tuner to clone it?

Like stated, he will need the ECU to be cloned cause the dealership will only sell you a new one.

Ams in west chicago can do this for you

also Eurocharged Austin Texas

and still .... check for oil in harness even if e350

I'll just throw this out there, we had the transmission lock out of our GL (722.9 transmission) and it turned out to be a bad battery. I would think they checked that, but you never know! ECUs don't go bad very often in my experience... best of luck!

We bought an used ECU with same part number on eBay, sent both in for clone service also on eBay. We received the ECU back today, plugged it in but it didn't work. Got error code 1405 ECU cannot communicate with transmission over CAN bus. Something wrong with transmission but not the ECU?

try starting with the actual key if you tried push button start .. take button out; insert key and try traditional turn key start; if this works it'll be the only time you need to do this and all should be fine

Thank you for you help. We used the key to start, not the button. No problem to start, no problem to turn the wheel, just can't shift out of park. :-)

I found a YouTube video on how to override the shifter so at least the car is now drivable. Problem is it won't shift out of 1st gear.

Sounds like your tcu is problematic as well - why do you think the ecu went bad?

I don't know. Some people had similar problem and resolved by replaceing the ECU. I'm going to replace the TCU next. I guess I would do the same as I did with the ECU? Buy a used TCU and clone the data?

Try a tcu reset first; did someone install a battery with the wrong polarity?

I will search for TCU reset. It's not a battery from Mercedes and it was installed over a year ago. Everything woked just fine until now. Thank you for your help.

So I tried to reset TCU, replace some of the fuses, replace brake light switch. None of these work. It's time for new TCU and data cloning?

TCUs should be interchangeable in the W211 unless it changed after 2006? So I don't think they require cloning. Don't the shifter assemblies go bad in these? I had mine for years and never ran into a problem, but if you needed to 'unlock' the shifter maybe that's the issue. I'd look around the W211 forums.

It was locked in P. I was able to unlock and drive around but it won't shift out of 1st gear. Thank you.

Mercedes won't replace just the TCU/TCM. They want to replace the whole valve body/conduct plate, part # A220270270687. This item is considered a theft relevant part and is not available for purchase online. The cost is $1,268, plus the cost to reprogram, and around 4-hr labor, and full transmission service (around $500) for the total around 3k. I'm think of buying a used TCU on eBay and DIY. I already asked Joe (Valvestud) for instruction to install it. If I can't do this myself, maybe an indy can do it for less.

P.S. Does anyone know the correct part# for the TCU?

what year and model is your vehicle

your issues is probably the valve body it's a common issue for 722.9... but if it's not cost prohibitive and you can do it I guess it's reasonable to replace the tcu though I've never read much on people doing this ... it won't be easy I don't think presuming 722.9 trans
