M157 Engine Oil related questions

1. What is the maximum capacity for engine oil for M157? Is it 9quarts? If so, is it true that you can add 1 additional quart?

2. At what engine oil liter/quart does the “Low Engine Oil Light” come on? For instance, 1 quart less? Or 2 from full capacity of 9quarts?

3. Oil dipstick is reading between Minimum and Maximum mark on the stick. How much quart would be needed to bring a oil dipstick from between Min-Max mark to Maximum?

I change at 5k

I use 5W 40 Liqui Moly change every 5k, I put 7 qts in start for about 30 second. I than top off to full by adding and checking level with car off. When about to reach the full mark I stop adding, clean up my space and let everything drain down. 15 minutes alter I check it again. I never saw my low oil light on and one time I went over 7500 miles before the change, mid winter NYS. weather.
I never had to add oil between change or seen my low level on.

I use liquid moly 5w40 as well.
I always put 8.5qts at first. Let it run for 5min or so, then turn it off, let it cool off for 10-15min and check dipstick, add more oil till it's on max on dip stick.

In my 16k miles of ownership i have never had to add extra oil ever, Mercedes says it's normal for turbo cars to burn some oil, especially if changing every 5-8k

If I had to give you a good guess, I add about 8.8-8.9qts of oil total

have you checked the dipstick right after a oil change?
is it marked at Maximum? If not, what is your dipstick reading at full oil capacity?

Not sure what you are asking?? It reads full/max after I am completely done and cleaned up. You never want to over fill hence why I gradually add it after the initial 8.5qts till it's full/max

you’ve added 8.5qts til it read full on dipstick. As mentioned, how much oil was added after 8.5qts was already added. Was .5qts added? Or a full quart? What was the total amount that was gradually added.

How can it be full at 8.5qts when I clearly said I add some more afterwards till I get it to max level. It all depends how much gets drained out /burned. Just add 9qts and you will be fine

Don’t overthink it. I do 9 quarts and the level is perfect for me . 3/4 of the way up on the dipstick to max. Also a tip: you won’t get an accurate reading when you change it. The best time is shutting the car off after driving(or when it’s been fully warmed up) and checking 5 minutes later.

+1 on this for sure. Just do 9 quarts. And yes when checking the "Mercedes way" is fully warmed up, something like 5-10 mins cool down and check (which I have NEVER done on this car, yet). My E55 was 9 quarts. My S550 is 9 quarts. So is this. Easy.

I did have a problem with the oil level sensor in my S550. It would report low when it wasn't low. After pulling my hair out and playing games with the dipstick I realized the float switch is probably just flakey. And it was. Meanwhile on my E55, it would almost never actually inform me of low oil. I would have to check via the computer and either look at the low/not low display or look at the quantity in the advanced menu. So I have an inherent distrust of some of these systems. But at least replacing the float switch on my S550 fixed that glitch.

The capacity is 8.5 depending on how hot the engine is, how much is in the head, how much is in the filter, etc. The actual way to check the oil level is contrived and I've NEVER done it. I've always filled to 9L on every single V8 mercedes I've ever driven which is like a lot considering my occupation.

9.5 is the MOST you should fill it if you're really goin after it. Some Porsches I just go straight to 10L and it doesn't care.
8 is the least you should fill it

I go straight to 9. Real sperglords will get it to right in the middle and be done with it. Anywhere on the dipstick until max is probably ok you can pull a dry dipstick out and the car won't even think the level is too low yet until you brake particularly hard. The car will let you know if its too low. I'm not saying it doesn't matter, I'm just saying theres a reasonable margin of error on this because oil changes viscosity, volume, and moves around alot.

Also if anybody in the thread would like to support the forum and is due for an oil change

Keep in mind that those numbers are if each system was bone dry.

I never had to add oil between change or seen my low level on.
Similar to some, the oil level on the dipstick never drops noticeably between oil changes on my car.

Driven hard, but not on the track.

I have had cars that 'burned' oil such as a Subaru STi that burned less than a quart / 1500 miles, but when I dropped a rebuilt engine in it stopped burning oil.
My RX-7 will go through a quart between oil changes.

Which translates to, wait for it, 9 quarts for an oil change.
