yes, you're right about your chassis dropping low without air-spring pressure.
Jack up the rear diff. and install jack stands at side lift points before valve replacement.
Use soapy water to double-check air connections while dealing with this.
Inspect & silicon lube your ride-height sensors to slow down the ball-joint rusting stuck.

the bags tend to collect sharp rocks and gravel in the folded area at each contact plate. with the car raised, a little compressed air can remove the dirt.
