2018 E63s

They ended up covering all but $500. MB, service side, sales side, myself put in $500 each to cover $2000 repair. I am grateful, but would have prefered a long term solution. Zunsport releases May 25 so until then, im rigging.

But any good performance car body shop would know how to do this. They knew right away what was needed, as most cars with intercooler have to be considered for additional protection. They have done this many times.

Here is a great source for grill mesh material that I've used in the past, aluminum or stainless steel..

I'm going to write to AMG Affalterbach regarding this issue and ask them to offer this protection as an optional add-on in the MB Configurator for the future.
I wonder why no one has thought about it yet, when you can order an additional engine protection for almost all models.
If you have any other ideas what to suggest to AMG, please let me know.

I'd also check into seeing if the plastic grid that comes over the intercoolers on the new E63s would fit over the CLS's intercoolers.

I believe MB is now putting screen shields on the new E63 AMG builds as standard equipment, Maybe they read my thread here? What gets me is they are not addressing all the older builds of the 2018 E63 AMGS built with no screen shields?

I talked to the zunsport rep today, he said they are approximately two weeks behind on these grills. So it's not going to be May 25th. Mid June... Nice DIY pics too, thanks for sharing.

There was another intercooler damage report in another thread. However, looking at the posted picture the new grids were in place. The only thing that appears to work would be a tight grid screen that would be removable for the track. This is a really bad design on MB's part.

Unfortunately, since the shape of the openings are quiet complex, it would take a long time to fit properly measured home made screens.
I made cardboard templates, then cut the screen, then fastened it to the ribs just using wire. If you look you can see the fairly ugly wire fastening.
Note that Mercedes is not the only one to miss this fairly obvious issue. My last Porsche GT3 had a similar issue, but Porsche addressed it quite quickly and all subsequent cars came with a nice factory fitted screen with about 1./4 inch openings. See photo.
In fact many manufactures, such as Jaguar, use the wire screens as a differentiator on their "performance" cars.
Not a good idea! You’ve just changed the cooling profile and probably voided the warranty. I would get those off ASAP and use the MB OEM parts. I understand MB has now added a grill.

Hi guys,

I got a response from AMG that you can order original protection for E63, S63 and AMG GT. The GT part no. is A0995030400 and will be available at the end of June 2018 for $20-30 USD.

you mean that black grid guard ? I thought there would be something new that goes before the grid guard, like an insert mesh that goes with those 2 horizontal bars. My car already has that and it sure does not protect anything.

Wanted to chime in on this thread with something that showed up on Instagram on a GT4. Looks like AMG has resolved this for the customer sport cars by adding a tight mesh in front of the radiators. Seems to be exclusive to the GT4 models, GT3 does not have this for some reason.

Are you saying it is useless? I'd hope it would at least prevent the fins from breaking inwards.

There might be a reason why they are not offering those fine mesh screens. If you use a screen H: 6mm x W: 3mm x Wire thickness 0.8mm mesh, the open area decreases by 53%.

useless ? well, in my case, I have not yet suffered any punctures thus far (just the typical fins dented/bent all over) as my daily travel is mostly local roadways but it certainly scares me esp. in the winter time (with all kinds of road debris) and obviously highways (stones & pebbles) battering the lower openings.

☐ Rekt ☑ Not Rekt
Hold on, on the zunsport ones, am I getting this right and it only takes a couple of minutes to install them?

Or is there prep work that has to be done with the bumper off before they clip on?
