Exclamation Shifting Issues E63S Edition 1 3500 miles - Case Opened with MB

18 E63S AMG Edition 1 - In the shop after rough shifting and gear hunting.

Main Complaint(s):
Shifting Issues
1-2 (WOT - Comfort, S, S+) The car will shift to 2nd at WOT and it feels like the front end of the car gets ripped out from underneath you, then it take off again. I didn't even try RACE Start with this condition present, figured it would result in broken metal.
4-3 @ 4200rpms (Any Mode), it clunks into 3rd, if you do this going into a corner the car completely unsettles and gets out of sorts.
6-2 when coming from a stop, rough shifts, jerking
Hunting for Gears after coming to slow roll, trans couldn't decide what gear to be in at 18-20mph left turn and slammed into 3rd
Generally rough shifting high noticeable in Comfort

Dealer has had the car since Saturday (Towed In) - Wasn't going to risk a broken trans, that's why we pay for mBrace, right?!
At first played the "cannot reproduce" game, however my salesmen took time out of his schedule to demonstrate to the technician.
4 days into it, they couldn't find a darn thing. They then reset the Adaptations (18 E63S only has Stationary Adaptations I'm told), Problem is even more present now.

Sorry to hear about your transmission problems... please keep us updated when the gremlins are found or about how MB deals with this. BTW... are you driving 100 miles everyday? That seems like a high count already.

Good luck!

I've done quite a few 5+ hour trips with it, yes. She's the DD.

Oh boy... Benz still can't build a decent shifting tranny

albeit most people don't seem to have this problem

hope this gets fixed!

MB asked the dealer to drop the transmission pan and inspect and send them photos. That was yesterday, today they we're authorized to replace the transmission. I'm waiting for details on what they found in the transmission pan.

3500 as stated in the OP. The car is also getting a new "wet starting clutch".

Never been to the strip, and they can see how many you've done. It had 4 Race Start launches on the car.

Wonder how many RSLs (Race Start Launches) are considered normal use and how many you get before it falls into the excessive category?

Hopefully those 4 were from you and not a "mystery" (dealership tech etc..)

Would be interesting to see what they would find when they disassemble the tranny. Bad bearing or gear or debris inside to begin with?

2018 E63S Edition 1
2018 E63s Edition 1 Trans Blew up

I have 3300 miles on my car and only did one Race Start at about 3200 miles. Then attempted to do another Race Start at 3300miles and the trans blew up. Car always clunked between gears as OP states and did not behave normal. Car is bone stock and stock tires. Car was towed to dealer and they sent me this picture. It needs a new trans and transfer case. Car has been at dealer for 2 weeks and still not done. I hope this platform is not going to be plagued with these transmission issues.

Wow... crazy seeing this from two of the Edition 1 cars and at roughly the same mileage... good luck to you as well.

Sounds like dying debris from a clutch pack or two or the valve body

When they started ripping apart my brand new 2014 E550 in 2014, I told them to take the car back

Hopefully these are early build vehicles in which something was identified and corrected later. You never wish a tranny change for anyone, infact for an Edition 1, I'd even be tempted to say replace the car.

No doubt it looks concerning on the service history

But if you're leasing who cares

this is not the $135,000 experience I would have paid for

I wonder if this will put a halt to those thinking about a simple tune? MB could (would) easily blame a tune for something like this, regardless of the fact that stock cars have documented the problem.

By “Benz” you must be referring to Chrysler. Daimler was a different story and their 722.622 was a bulletproof trans in every aspect considering it receives a service every 80-90k. Next would be the 722.328 and 722.365 which was a bulletproof 4 spd, but not so eager to shift like the 722. These are the definition of robust and capable of a good thrashing every single day of the week.

I feel everything got a bit out of hand with these newer transmissions which ultimately leads to problems. No doubt complex w/ all the additional parts required. I feel the same about this stop and start nonsense at lights and does it really make that big of a difference?! The only exception to the rule for me is a CLK 63 Black Series. I get a good feeling about this one.

I hope everything works out for the op! I could not help myself and had to respond to this specific post. I’m pushing close to 500hp on my 208 55 w/ the stock trans and drive the car hard. GL!

Peter is right. The 722.6 was arguably bulletproof but it could hardly be considered “decent shifting” at this performance level.

Crazy they play that cannot reproduce game when the trans is destroyed. Say you went and drove the car away like that and it totally quit on a busy highway and you get hit by a truck or something. They really need to be more careful with this type of thing. Lets hope this is not an ongoing problem with these cars. There's gotta be some of these transmissions that have some decent mileage on them with the cars sold in Europe that are 2017 models which I believe they have been selling about a year now? Never really heard anything about those cars having any issues.

Does this justify a new trans @ 3.5k miles?? AMG is not at fault, it appears Chrysler cannot keep up with things on their end.

An SL73 was equipped w/ a 5 spd trans from Daimler. How times have changed..
