Question on real world driving range with new E63S

Greetings,

I would love to hear what drivers are finding to be the real world driving range with the new E63S. I realize the car will get horrific fuel economy, but I am fine with that. It comes with the territory so to speak.

But I would like to know how far owners are able to drive on a single tank before the low fuel light comes on. Assume combined driving with a modest amount of hooligan behavior.

Thanks to all!

Rob

I drove cross country from Washington, DC to San Diego.

Average on the Interstate was just about 20 MPG as I recall. Typically I was driving reasonably with the flow of traffic, which was 5 to 10 MPH over the posted limits. I wasn't pushing for max range and typically filled up when I got close to 1/4 of a tank.

I filled up Saturday with 25 miles of range showing on the gauge and it took 18.94 gallons. Supposedly it has a 21.1 gallon tank so there were still a couple in there and given that it said 25 miles of range, I guess it must figure it can suck the tank pretty well dry.

So, if I'd hit the highway straight away after fill up, I could do about 20 miles/gal x 18.94 gal + 25 miles (reported remaining range) = 403.8 miles of total range.

My recollection is that the low fuel minder comes up with something like 60 or 80 miles left, so you could do around 320 miles to 340 miles before you get the message. The nice thing is that it will then offer to route you to a station and provide a list of those along your route. Nice when you don't know the area.

I drove to Mt Palomar yesterday for fun. Noted the average since reset for the tank was showing 18.7 MPG before I hit the mountain. After a trip up/down the mountain it was showing 12.5 MPG, and by the time I got back home it was showing something back up over 15. I should note that the trip up and down the mountain did include some spirited driving in Sport+ mode.

YMMV as they say . . .

BTW, driving with the Distronic cruise control engaged disables the 4 cylinder deactivation and coasting modes. I've found that I can actually do a little better on fuel economy if I drive the car myself. So that's one thing to consider if you're looking for max range. Driving in Sport and Sport+ disables them as well as far as I know, plus economy definitely goes down in Sport+ mode.

I'm 1,100 miles in and I'm averaging 12.5 miles / gallon in my daily drive of 30 miles or so in mixed traffic.

I'm getting about that mileage too. I need two fuel ups every 3 weeks.

Also I have noticed that the fuel light comes on early. If I fuel up when the light comes up, I can get 15-16 gallons in the tank. Which means the light comes on with 6-7 gallons left to go.

I suspect it's about to get far worse--I'm about to add 90 whp and ~140 wtq with the tune (assuming the dyno plot pans out) == too tempting if my previous RS7 at these power levels is anything to go by.

To be clear, I was only giving max range in a highway driving mode.

Around town in my short drive to work and for misc trips around town I’m also in the 12.5 mpg range.

The good news if you absolutely had to get really good fuel economy you could just cruise along at 58 mph or so in 4 cyl mode and get around 25 mpg, so it might be possible to go 500 miles on a tank if you had to do so. Say, driving across Texas where there are not many gas stations. Or if you wanted to drive like a fool you could get 200 miles out of a tank

My cylinder de activation rarely kicks in. No matter how nice I drive. That said I have very very vew miles on mine - about to get to 2k my car has been in the shop for almost a month on and off leave that for a different discussion. Best I got was around 380 but think I could have squeezed it to 400 if you run it dry babying it

I've had my E63 since December and I still haven't clocked 1,000 miles yet, mostly because I have summer tires on and few opportunities to drive in appropriate weather with that restriction!

That said, I see 4-cylinder activation kick in at between 1,000 to 1,500 revs. At first I didn't see it activate much but I've noticed it a bit more now. It sometimes is only on for a few seconds and disappears as soon as you put any pressure on the accelerator. I notice it most going slightly downhill at 30 - 40 mph with very light accelerator.
