New M5 Competition Package: numbers announced

M5 CP announcement

M5 CP numbers: 617 hp and 553 ft Ibs.

As is the BMW way, these numbers are almost certainly far less than the car actually makes.

Saw the big hoopla over at M5Post.... should be a strong(er) car than the F90 "base" of course. Its now a tier up car with the package built into the Monroney vs being on the addendum as an itemized option like it was with my F10 M5, F13 M6, and F82 M4.

I like the way they present the car in this format:

Still think the car is boring looking and glad I didn’t go the BMW route again.

There is alot of dialogue about this over on the M5 boards. I quote this post:

Everyone complaining that it's a 17bhp power upgrade need to do the math and remember your getting the exact same 441kW or 460kW car from Germany as the rest of us.

If we want to start using BHP to represent the power of the car the "base" M5 doesn't even have 600bhp.

The "base" F90 M5 is 591bhp

441kW = 591bhp
460kW = 617bhp (Competition)

Thats a power upgrade of +26bhp. Not +17bhp.

If you want to keep saying your cars 600hp you better get back to using the metric system cause your car is 599 metric horsepower rounded up to 600. Not 600bhp.

Therefore the M5 Competition would also be quoted in metric horsepower not BHP. 460kW = 625hp (metric horsepower)

There is a 25/26hp power upgrade however you wish too look at it.
441kW - 460kW =19kW (26bhp or 25hp)

So now we can start calling the comp pack for what it is, just like the BMW press video, just like the BMW website. 625hp.

ok so its 625 "metric" horsepower.

And the 612hp figure for the E63S, is that also "metric" horsepower or is that "bhp" ?

No clue, I dont think Ive ever seen a 612 number just the 603hp one on my sticker. But I would assume the 612 is metric and 603 is bhp.

Metric HP (referred to by the unit PS) is 735.3 W per HP versus Imperial HP which is 745.7 W per HP.

The engine of course produces the same number of kW regardless of whether it's a US, Euro, or other model (assuming of course that the same tune and fuel is used everywhere), so it's just a difference in standards (or non-standards if you will).

And yes, the lower case k is the correct casing of the kilo unit prefix . . .
