BMW 550i M- Sport; '19 E63s or '19 M5??
More Power for 2019?

Today I received a call from a Dealer in SoCal indicating that the Dealer believed based on a recent Dealer briefing/update that there would more factory power for all E63s cars (e.g., not just a Black Series, etc.). This came up when the Dealer indicated they had an incoming car and I said that with the new M5 Competition Model coming I was hoping Mercedes would respond.

I doubt that this is true, but who knows?

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
I doubt it too, can't imagine they'd change things up so quickly. More power requires more engineering expenses and recertification of emissions which is a big PITA these days with like TWO US EPA workers and Pruite spending all the EPA money for his own security and fancy hotels, lol. So, nope very highly unlikely. lol.

2018 E63S Wagon
Nope. The E63 has been a solid, consistent seller for Mercedes and if the past is any indication they are perfectly happy keeping the power output the same throughout its life. BMW are the ones that keep trying to upsell/get you to upgrade on a yearly basis for 10-15 hp. Anyway, Mercedes underrates the power output anyway. The E63 is making closer to 700 than 600 hp at the crank so if they wanted they could up the reported power without touching anything and still not be lying.

Well... I am sure you are correct. However, this means no answer to the M5 Competition Model and there are those that care about such things in a dual-purpose car like the E63s and M5.

I would argue that BMW intentionally matches up the non-competition to the plain E63 so they can offer a more expensive competition pack that better matches the "S" later so that they get some owners to double dip. There's been a role reversal with AMG and M over the past decade and a half. AMG is now making what would have felt like a harder edged "M Car" 15 years ago and BMW is making the softer of the two offerings. It's why, after 10 years of BMW M cars, I switched to AMG for the original C63, then a CLK Black Series, then a SLS, and now the E Wagon. Not only does BMW's design no longer appeal to me, they constantly feel like they're playing catch up to the competition. AMG can settle back and bask in the awesomeness of the E63 while BMW keeps churning out Competition packs, 30th anniversary editions, etc. to game the market.

The reason Mercedes makes a separate model is for resale .. extra options and packages generally get washed to a degree on trade ins.. not a whole diff model.. we used to do a AMG development package.. but they opted to do full "S" models to separate them.. when you trade in in a few years they will see M5 and not care as much that is has a "go faster" package.. (more often then not)

Well to be clear on the new F90 M5 Competition Edition, its a completely different model of M5 and not an option on the Monroney; its built into the MSRP this time vs the prior ZCP packs.

In simpler terms, Mercedes is probably giving the best version of the car they're going to offer upfront with the E63S. Whereas BMW is selling the most inferior version of their car to begin then plan to keep offering better versions every 1-2 years with the M5.

Yes the M4 GTS is different model built into the msrp along with the M4 Competition Series.... the Competition Package (aka ZCP) is an option on the regular M3/M4.

Full disclosure, I have had 8 M's and have a lot of respect for the builds I had especially the E39 M5 which had almost 400 hp back in 2002.

Unlikely until the mid life upgrade imo. I expect the 630hp GT Sedan engine to make its way into the E63 by then for sure. Its not like the car needs more power. The M5 Competition isn't really about the miniscule hp bump - in my experience with M cars you can never feel the extra ZCP hp even back to back. At least with the f80, I strongly suspected that BMW really only changed the "claimed" hp numbers while making the throttle a little bit shorter in every mode. Those cars all made ~480 crank hp anyway. Like past ZCP cars, its mainly about the suspension, steering and exhaust. It will probably trade some of the base M5s comfort advantage over the E63 for better handling and a quicker steering rack. All these cars are so powerful these days that any "extra" power is really just a pissing contest for insecure people.

So you're saying I should wait for the HP bump...

JK, while nobody would really argue against more HP, I agree that this is more of a watercooler point than a real-world point. It does seem clear that the 4.0TT V8 has a bit of headroom on power though, so "reasonable" tune-heads can feel secure.
