Idiot dealer

Just had the front tires replaced from the dealership. Got home and noticed below. Will go back tmrw. Just some input on how I should handle it, thanks. (sorry for the poor photos)

Totally unacceptable, and then not say anything about it! I'll bet they will deny and say it was there before. You almost have to do a cursory view of all work done before you drive off.

Just tell them straight out, your mechanic dinged my wheel putting a new tire on....

Noticed a similar thing on my front wheel a day or so after picking up the car after its ~3-week ordeal with the CEL. Kind of a chip similar to yours. Odd in that it wasn't a rash along the edge of the wheel, but more like something about as broad as my thumb chiseled up and broke off a sliver.

Was pretty PO'd but ultimately decided not to bother about it as I figured it would be hard to prove. But if it had been something like bringing in the car for a tire change and discovering it right after that, I'd definitely have raised some hell.

Gad damn I hate seeing this! I'd raise hell and demand it be replaced! It's funny how a lot of dealers will do that BS 'walk around' and then return a car with a crap wheel......good luck to you.

Damn. To be honest, they will deny everything and you have no proof to prove them wrong. It sucks. Once you drive off the dealer lot, It's nearly impossible to prove that they did it. Happened to me once on another car and I went weeks arguing with the dealership and at the end all it costed me was my time and a few hundred to fix the wheel. Good luck.

It's so very careless.
I've had the same thing happen. scraped rim + damaged sidewall where a chunk of the tire was taken out.
One thing that was better than your dealer was that they notified me of the damage and eventually got everything squared out; refinished + repainted rim, sent to my detailer to reapply ceramic pro, and a new tire.
I had them draft a written letter and sign it detailing that they'll do all of that prior to leaving. Everything in writing, signed. They need to make you whole.
you may want to submit a letter to MB headquarters. They will reply.

That sucks, hate when you bring the car in spotless and comes out unacceptable. It’ll be hard to prove once you drive it off of the lot, but fight like hell trying just so they know it’s unacceptable. Good luck.

I have had so many bad experiences in the service department with careless handling. One time some kid moving the cars stepped on and scratched the door sill plate on our SL with big, sandy sneakers right in front of me! The guy didn't even get what I was talking about. Cost them a new sill plate...
If you have a good dealer, they will take are of the curb damage even without admitting it as a bad service survey will cost them more than the repair.

Standard procedure for me is to take a quick pics of the 4 wheels before service. Takes all but a second. Then ask to have put on a seat cover (they have fabric ones); needed if you have light leather seats and the put masking tape on the door sill. Sounds **** but it keeps the car in the condition you gave it to them.

Good luck! The service survey give you leverage for these kinds of things.

I always treat it like rental car pick up and drop off

I check my car when I drop it off.... and again on pick up...

I do feel sorry for the kid that did it because he probably was not trained properly how to do tires and/or handle car in respectful way.....

Way back when as a teenager working for a independant repair shop owned by a German guy first thing I learned was how to get in and out of car not to ding doors, fender covers, move belt buckle to my hip so as not to scratch.. etc etc.
Then it was how to move a broom properly...

they need to teach the basics again...

Good for you! At least they admitted it, other dealers could fight you on this. As you say, always check your work before you leave. Taking pictures prior to work is a good idea as well.

Sob... I get mad with people not being responsible. Glad they accepted the fault. It's a very ungrateful position trying to prove they did it when many times we didn't even check the car before leaving it at the dealer...

Now I try to be picky and methodical. Take timestamp photos of every angle of the car and then the door sills. After the job is done I will take my time with a visual inspection but it can happen that i will miss the fault so the pictures are essential.

Can anybody speak if a repair is noticeable in this case? Will the rim be just as good as it was before?

I always get the wheel insurance when I buy an AMG. Road rash is inevitable. The repairs are amazing. On my 2013 C63 I've probably had all four wheels done three times. The wheels look brand new every time.

I have to respectfully disagree, road rash isn't inevitable......I have however, had one instance in 8 years......once.........and it was total carelessness on my part, hasn't happened since!

I had a similar ding removed via my dealer and you can not tell at all where it was. Have the exact same rims.

I prefer to have tire mounting/dismounting work done at good tire shops. Think about it, tire shops mount and dismount tires all day long and that's all they do. The chance of a problem is much less than places, ie dealerships, that do mostly other car related works.
