safelite front windowshield replacement
I've had a couple windshields replaced so far. One by the VPC and one by a dealer in Texas.
On the last night during my European Delivery on the drive between Munich and Stuttgart I got hit by a pebble from a truck somewhere way in front of us. Very small little crack. Wasn't sure if the VPC would just glue it or what, but they replaced the whole windshield, even moving the Vignette stickers. Any cost associated with the replacement was covered by the European Delivery Program's insurance. I did have a problem resulting from the replacement which was that when I picked up the car in the US, I got a bunch of warnings that the Distronic features were disabled, apparently because the camera alignment had gotten messed up.
Then a couple days later while driving cross country to California I got nailed by a huge rock from lord knows where, possibly dropped from a bridge above. I called Mercedes and they were able to find a dealership in Dallas who had a windshield that had all the features I did, HUD, IR film, etc.
Talking with the dealership, I could have used either the Windshield Replacement insurance I purchased through Mercedes or my auto insurance, which is Allstate. In the end I decided to use one of my silver bullets from the Mercedes insurance, so the factory glass was put in and cameras realigned and life was good again with the Distronic system.
In talking with the dealership and the issues with auto insurance companies and factor vs aftermarket glass, what the dealer said is the way most of his customers work around the issue is they go to the dealership first and have the glass replaced with factory glass then have the insurance company brought in.
My wife and brother in-law were both Allstate agents at the time and had dealt with the desire by some of their customers, particularly more affluent ones with higher end cars and were really aware of this issue. They both agreed with the approach recommended by dealer. Get the windshield replaced then contact the insurance company. They pretty much have to pay for the factory glass at that point.
My worry was that aftermarket glass wouldn't have the acoustic and solar protection features that the factory glass has.
Best of luck whichever way you go, and make sure you try to use the Distronic features after you pick up the car to make sure it still self drives and the adaptive cruise control works and so.

I had them do the work at their shop instead of at my home because I thought they would have better equipment and environment for doing the work. The work was perfect.
