I happened to have a big piece of sound/shock absorbing fabric from a recent delivery and cut strips to fold/roll up and put as much as I could between the plastic piece and the metal. I then took the remaining piece, which was a small blanket size, and lined the compartment and folded up a double layer on the edges to go around hatch (cut a niche out for latch) and placed the storage tray back on top. I then Made some adjustments and closed the hatch gently...It worked! Zero rattles on the roads I had rattled around on the day before. I plan to clean up the installation and use some double sided tape, etc. but this has changed the car! I’m in the northeast so I’m glad I could figure this out so quickly... Please let me know if anyone reading this wants to see some pictures in case you suspect this is the source of your rattle. So pumped to have fixed the hot rod wagon without going to the dealer!
sure. I like to see a bunch of pics as to exactly what you are referring to and your solution to the issue.

I bought a WeatherTech rear bed liner for my wagon, and it seems to dampen a lot of the resonance noise generated back there. Now if I could only get my golf clubs to stay quiet!

E63S Wagon
Since this got topped, I will chime in with my 2020 experience. It is an absolute tank, and dead silent. Hope that's the case for other 2020 and beyond builds. I was geared up to be SUPER picky about squeaks and rattle in my brand new six-figure station wagon. Luckily, I have nothing to complain about in that department.

I'd love to get back behind them and put some felt in there. My commute has me going over some corrugated road surfaces being prepped for new pavement and it's like driving a snare drum, lol. I even put a big pad of felt behind the rear license plate in hopes that it may help. This is nuts!

Thanks again,

Hello! I have an E43 with similar rattle issues. But I was wondering since it is an old thread, after 3 years is the issue still persisting? or mostly acceptable in your standards?

Might try changing the tires to all seasons. The stock low profile tires are punishing. I swapped them for Michelin Super Sport All Seasons and the car got noticeably quieter. I lost some handling, but for daily driving it was worth it.

People have recommended me on the tires you got there. May I ask what size is your wheel? I'm running the 20" Pzero NF and its terrible in terms of ride quality. Handle wise tho its good. Also, is it significantly better in terms of ride quality and less rattles and buzzes?

Opposite for me with regards to Porsche, the build quality was extremely bad that even my Alfa Brera was a better build lol.

Yet I’d say every manufacturer has issues here and there. Previous MBW M cars have been good with the exception of the M4 trans and build quality although I may have been unlucky on that one?

Either way, @Brewer you should check all your interior panels yourself - if you have not done so already; followed by taking it back to the dealer, asking them to ID the culprits. They may need it for a while though!? Sorry, sounds like you got one of the weaker of the bunch hey!? 😅

Myself, I’ve had several rattles from my GLC, Inwent through the interior plastic panels near where I would say the noise came from and identified 2 panels that were loose due to poor molding.

I ordered it anyway. A Panamera would never rattle like this...but those are not The Hammer.

Same here. No rattles or annoying noise from the interior, the Pirelli P zero where quieter than the Michelin PS4s. and love them on the wagon.

I guess it depends on individual car and not a year it was built.
My 2018 at 27k miles solid as a tank and absolutely no rattles.
