Wow this is probably the most efficient and cost effective method. Thanks! A local body shop quoted me $850 to remove the grill, paint, reinstall citing labor and time consuming as the reasons. I will try this route.

Wow on that pricing. If you remove the Bumper its around 30 minutes it really goes off quick and is easy to align.
But as you see you dont need to remove the Bumper. The Mercedes-Star-Ring is a bit hard to turn and remove sometimes but from there it goes well.

My question is more around the clips holding the silver part on. How did you remove those?

Make sure the piece is not cold. Warm it up if possible. And just pull. You start from the middle when you remove the RING. You will get a feel for it.

Oh man, that makes me nervous breaking clips! Nothing broke when you did it and it just clipped back in when you were done?

not a single one broke. And even if.. you can lose about 3-4 clips no big deal. Worst case you gotta buy a new grille piece. Which is around 300$. These are not real "CLIPS" they are super flat no real "hook"

wrapped

Just got our car back, and our installer was able to wrap it. Said it was tricky but think it turned out great!

You should wrap the ring as well. Ye i wrapped it as well but it was way too much tension. Did you use inlays? as long as it holds up all good.

IMO, looks much better without the outer ring blacked out because that's part of the Mercedes star emblem. It would look equally odd if you blacked out just the ring on the rear emblem and had a chrome 3 pointed star.

The "outside" of the ring is wrapped, but I'm not sure if he could do the "front" of the ring. We are happy as it is, and most likely will leave it as is. BTW, this is Obsidian Black with a Stealth wrap. He used a black gloss wrap for the grill.

Holy Sh**, it worked! Took the emblem off, heated it up with a heat gun for a little bit and pulled it off. Just an FYI for anyone that wants to do this:

1. Make sure you are distributing the load on your hand evenly on the inside of the emblem area, I focused on one spot and nearly broke the slots where the emblem slides in
2. Make sure you warm it up. I tried doing it somewhat cold and it came off much easier after I spent some time warming the whole thing up.
3. After you get the middle out and you start to see a gap forming, I used a mini plastic squeegee to pop the wings off. Came off like butter.

Just got a couple quotes. $125-200 locally to prep and paint. Cheaper than wrapping and looks better.

yes! I’ve ordered obsidian and was planning to do xpel stealth - can you see the “sparkle” in the obsidian still in the sunlight?

Hey Muc,

I just want to confirm this...you were able to remove the wing part of the grill we are all talking about without dropping the bumper?

Thanks

Got the grill back from the painter today - looks way better and snapped back in easily. I vinyl wrapped the star myself and it turned out great.

@E63S.Muc , just found this post and went to assess it on mine. Is the star emblem supposed to twist to the left? I tried that and it was super snug. Is this where warming up the sides will help it twist off more easily?
