2019 AMG E53
E53 Motor Oil

The proper oil for the 2019 E53 4Matic+ has been discussed in other threads, but my question is a little politically incorrect.

The AMG supplement to the owners manual specifies Mercedes oils:
229.51, which is 5W30
229.52, also 5W30
229.61, no MB oil
229.71, which is 0W20

229.5 and 229.51 are specified for other AMG models, such as the E63S, but not for the E53. 229.5 MB oil is 5W40, which seems safer to me than 5W30. Why doesn't MB allow it for the E53? Is it just to enable them to post a marginally better gas mileage? Or is there a good mechanical reason for it?

Motul 8100 X-clean in 5W40 is MB-Approval 229.51

So today I had my first oil change at the Mercedes dealer (5000 mi. to exceed requirements). They put in part number 000-989-83-01-USB9. This is 5W40 oil, I believe Mobil 1 Formula M or Mobil Super Formula M. Athough these do meet Mercedes standard 229.5, they don't meet requirement #1 of the AMG supplement to my owner's manual, which specifies 229.51, 229.52, 229.61 or 229.71. However, they do meet requirement #2, which says "only use engine oils of viscosity class SAE 0W-40 or SAE 5W-40." These two requirements for the E53 4Matic+ are somewhat contradictory, since there are very few 5W40 or 0W40 oils that meet 229.51 or 229.52 and I think you would have a hard time finding them at a Mercedes dealer. For example, at the Mobil oil website, when I punch in my model and location, the only oils that come up for my car in their "find the right oil" feature are Mobil ESP X2 0W-20 and Mobil EST 0W-30. Mobil does have a 5W40 oil that meets 229.51 but it must not be available in my area (Chicago, which is kinda big). That oil is Mobil Super 3000 XE 5W40.

Anyway, unless someone can convince me that a big mistake was made, I'm happy with 5W40 oil that meets 229.5, which is good enough for all other AMG E-class except the E53. And it meets their contradictory requirement #2.

229.51 - have quite a lot 5W40 oils approved. I've been running on 5W30 (229.52), but temperatures are quite high (109-114*C running 200km/h on highways) so next I'll take 5W40 229.51.

Can 53 AMG owners say what maximum oil temperatures they observed? I saw 114*C max (237*F) - if you can provide *C and *F would be great and what oil. Over 6000km and zero oil consumption on 5W30 229.52, but I'm totally not satisfied with the oil temperature.

229.5 is not for cars that have DPF filters and 53 AMG contains this filter so 229.5 should not be used.
229.51 are not only 5W30 - also 5W40, 229.52 are not 5W30 there are some 5W40 also classified in this norm.

E53 is IMO an engine that is created even to use 0W20 for some fanatics to meet emission norms and fuel consumption norms. Great on a paper, and that's it. Yes you are right - marginally better gas mileage and emission norms, but each person buying this engine should be aware about it and use 5W30 or 5W40.

so so very close to a realization but so very far.

Mine once reached 119C on hard driving while it stays between 110C to 114C on normal condition, I believe the corrent engine oil is 0W-20 so I'm considering to switch to motul 8100 5W-40 229.51

0W20 is for sure filled in the car when you bought it

so what's the concise here, 0w40, 0w30, 5w40, 5w30 which is best for east cost climate, for a 2019 E53 AMG, i am thinking 5w40 since my car has hit 230F with my drive

Call me a hack...I'd like to get smarter. I see a really wide range in properties as 'approved', this my conclusion it that it doesn't matter.

Let me have it.

230F = 110*C is a totally normal temperature in this car. My max which I noticed was 114-115*C in a regular driving on a highway without even revving the car, but in most time it's like 108*C-112*C. When oil temp hits > 125*C you will get a power cut. From the other hand if oil temp is > 118*C cooling system is turning on and oil is being transfered via some kind of "cooling system" from general radiator, because this car does not have direct oil cooling radiator.

I heard somewhere such high temp. of oil here is somehow due to "eco" type of this car, no matter what it means.
Because temp is high I'm driving on 5W40, especially if you live in a climate where 30*C+ happens. Oils like 0W30 or 0W20 should be IMO considered where you live in -20*C regions.

Anyway for 5 years almost driving my car each time I replace the oil I'm sending it to the lab. I'm not a racer, but this oil max reliability seems to be around 8000-10000km in my case mostly thanks to almost 9L of an oil pan.

What wear indicators are you seeing in your oil tests?

iI am the OP of this thread. I have changed my oil every 5K miles at the Mercedes dealer. Each time they have put in 229.5 oil, that is how it is identified on the invoice. FYI, the actual part number that appears on the invoice is 000-989-79-02-198IFUMB. That part number can't be found online but 000-989-79-02-19 can be, with a BIFU on the end. That is 229.5 SAE 5W-40 Bulk Mercedes oil.

I have a 2019 E53, the first year of the E53. At first I thought that they may not have been familiar with the E53's special oil requirements. Now I think that they know what they're doing and I've given up worrying about it.
