Michelin Pilot Sport 4s & tirerack

Looking to buy a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires from Tirerack. They list 2 version. Both have the same specs but one says Mo1 Mercedes and the other one doesn't. The ones that do not say Mo1 Mercedes are approx $20 per tire cheaper. Can anyone tell me what the difference is? Tirerack did not know lol

MO1 Tire – Designed for performance-division AMG® models

Earning the MO Seal of Approval

Each Mercedes Original tire is developed in cooperation with elite tire manufacturers, specifically to fit your vehicle. They must comply with over 40 detailed specifications and pass multiple rounds of testing and modification, including the rubber mixture, structure and tire tread. Only once it reaches the Mercedes-Benz level of quality will it earn the “MO” label on the side of the tire.

Similar to what Porsche is designating theirs

I find it odd that Tirerack cannot tell us what the difference is. I would assume if there is different rubber used or an acoustic layer added, etc. they should be able to disclose that.

An earlier post on this topic said that the Mercedes version has the anti-rim scuff band of rubber that helps protect the rim from minor curb rashing. The non-Mercedes version does not.

I'm just repeating what I recall and can't vouch for this from personal experience. I purchased my replacement set from the dealer who gave me a very competitive price compared to the aftermarket tire stores.

This information is largely proprietary. Car manufacturers work with the tire manufacturers to optimize the tires for their vehicles. This could involve anything from differences in the internal construction, to differences in the tread pattern and compound makeup as well as other things. Some of the differences you can see if you compare the specs between the different variants on Tire Rack. You'll find difference in things like section width etc. Some manufacturer's specs will also have less initial tread depth to improve the handling of a brand new tire. Ferrari spec tires for example often start at 7/32" vs. the more common 9.5-10.5/32". Not for the PS4S, though, but for other tires I've seen them start with lower tread depth. Not many sizes of the PS4S are available in MO or MO1 spec yet, but if they are for your sizes then I would go with the proper spec to get most out of the tire for your car. I have the PS4S on my '19 C63S coupe, but so far no MO or MO1 spec available in my sizes. The standard spec is still much better than the MO/MO1 spec PSS that my car came with.

If it is just the anti-rim scuff band of rubber, I can tell you from personal experience that that ****ty little rim prtooector provides no protection against curb rash, even when you barely rub the curb. And when your wife rubs the curb hard, it actually tears the band off and leaves the tire looking like a mess!

Agreed, it isn't much protection. I managed to scuff a wheel with a pretty minor brush against a curb once with the stock Pirelli tires that came on the car. It just ripped the rubber strip as you described.

I try to give the curbs plenty of leeway. Don't know if the Michelin are any better than Pirelli, but there was one instance where the Michelin anti-scuff strip might have actually given me just enough warning to save me.

The standard PS4S already has more protection compared to say the PSS, but I think that's more meant so that road debris bounces of the rubber rather than the wheel. To avoid curb rash, that's what the side view of the 360 camera is for. The PS4S helps especially if the tire is somewhat stretched on the wheel. The stock PSS left the lip of my rear wheels quite a bit exposed to road debris. Now with the PS4S, which is also slightly wider in the same size, the lip is more protected against road debris.
