MB declining to offer ELW?
Hi All
I am in the process to purchase a 2018 E63S Wagon. It is at a non-MB dealer and a few hours drive from where I live.
Given it is still in factory warranty period I called a couple of MB dealers to get a quote on ELW and was told this vehicle is not eligible for ELW. I can see from Carfax that it was previously CPO'd and then returned to a dealer, and I read somewhere that once CPO has been placed on a vehicle they won't go back to ELW, but still didn't quite add up. I know all manufacturers make a lot of money in the aggregate on selling extended warranties (on account of most people spending more on the warranty then the cost of repairs covered) so seemed like an odd reason to decline to sell an extension.
Anyone have any experience of something like this?
I am getting a PPI done tomorrow, but figured there are a lot of folks on here and that surely someone would have seen this before.

I could imagine CPO constitutes a warranty extension since it adds 1 year to the the factory warranty. Just a thought, but maybe other dealers or forum members can add input.

Yes a non mercedes dealer selling a used car you cannot put the MB warrantee on it. I think it has something to do with they like for own their dealers to go through the car and certify it before selling you a extension on the warrantee, makes sense to me I can see where they are coming from. You might be best off finding a certified car from a Benz dealer if you do want the warrantee extension which is a good idea.

Thanks for the feedback. I did more digging through the site and found some others suggesting the same with regards the non-merc dealer issue. Honestly that makes me feel a bit better, I was concerned given how much data they can pull from cars these days that perhaps they had identified a problem, and that was driving them to decline to offer a warranty extension.
Will see how the PPI comes back tomorrow, but based on some calling around on 3rd party exclusionary type warranties (which I believe are the best to shoot for) I could get a 3rd party warranty for about half the cost that MB ELW was being quoted (before the flag was spotted) and stash the other half away to cover any potential shortcomings.
Appreciate the comment on waiting for a CPO. It had run through my mind, but I have been watching this market for a little while and they just don't come up very often. This one, assuming no grenades during PPI, still has a year of manufacturer warranty so I have a bit of time to figure it out, and CPO would only gain me 1 year (plus the possibility to extend through MB for up to 2 of course).

I just bought a CPO’D 2018 wagon too through a MB dealer and it seems like getting a warranty on these are a good idea. I ended up buying the extension just so I can have the peace of mind.
But before I did buy the wagon my mechanic who I know very well recommended to make sure the 3rd party warranty I considered covered electronics. Some apparently don’t and cause a lot of headache.

I only do the MB warrantees personally and buy them from a dealer in California who gives a great deal. I would not have the risk tolerance myself to buy a used non certified e63. It worked out good with my 2018 S560 I bought a few months ago. It had a year of factory left on it a year of CPO and I bought a 2 year unlimited mile extension on that for 4K. So 4 years unlimited mile Warrantee even better than a new car limited to 50k miles.

Be aware the CPO warranty on this car is terminated, you will receive only the remaining factory warranty. MBUSA only transfers the CPO warranty in private party sales. If the car is sold through a dealer, the CPO warranty terminates. This has been the case for at least 20 years that I recall. Thanks for all the feedback folks. Based on not being able to extend the MB warranty I looked into some other options and am going to get an exclusionary warranty from CUNA Mutual. I've seen some others on this forum have had pretty good success with CUNA and the value proposition is great. I can get 7/75 coverage with a $250 deductible for about half the cost of the MB ELW (3/50 effectively). Realize it's not apples to apples, but gives me enough confidence to move forward.
The PPI came back very clean. Only item of concern was some surface cracking on the CCB rotors. Initially got me a bit worried but a couple of different 3rd parties saw the pictures and let me know they were not a concern.
So looks like I will be moving forward.
