Fix for W213 dashboard creak rattle+ Fix for W213 steering popping on incline/decline

Hi all, I have finally fixed my car at the dealer. I now travel 100km on electric and it's whisper quiet. I don't know the name of the part, but I am attaching some pictures. Take off the plastic covers and you will find loose bolts. Tighten them.

Better insert some felt tape as well in the bolt hole and tighten on it, as my dealer did.

I was surprised that my dealer knew what he was doing, he told me both the rattle AND the pop are the same thing it's the aluminum piece moving in the dashboard. At first I thought my steering going crazy.

Anyway, I hope this helps as many people as possible, I know for a fact at least 3 people have now had their creaking stop including me.

As you see in the pictures, where I have circled, just remove the plastic cover on top and tighten these bolts. You're done.

thanks for posting this, I went out to my C238 (E400) and it has these aluminum bars, I guess they are tensioners or engine braces, but they appeared to be very tight, I had a 10mm pro socket wrench but it didn't seem to grip this 'mercedes' nut so well, and slipped off when I applied pressure,
do I need a special tool to tighten these nuts ?

also, the other two 'nuts' you have circled in your photos are just plastic caps sitting on what I guess is the AC tubes, they can be tightned by hand...

cheers

This is in the engine bay ? I thought the issue was the cover on top of the dash inside the car ?

2018 A238 E-Class Cabrio
Thanks @MBOCD and @Andrew Croydon ! I have a 2018 E-Class cabrio purchased about 18 months ago (34,000 miles now) and have been wrecking my head searching for the cause of this fairly loud creak/knock when going over bumps, coming from the centre of the dash. I originally thought it was the hood, notorious for such noises, until I realised it was the same with the roof down. Sent it in to my local Merc Indy (dealers here are rubbish) to look at - he spent a couple of hours checking out the expensive stuff like suspension but said it was all OK and the dash would have to come off to investigate further. Like others, thats the last thing I wanted to happen. So I have been searching all the forums for months but for some reason didnt find this post until today. Checked it out and tightened the torx-head bolt as per the pictures. It was tell-tale when I looked at it - I could see the shiny 2mm circle under the bolt where the bar had been moving. To answer @Aliw140 it wasn't loose, but took about another 3/4 turn to get it nicely tight. Looks like this bar is some kind of strengthener, and the factory probably has a torque setting for it which isnt quite enough. The noise had got worse over the past 18 months, ie happening more often. Over the moon to finally solve it, just back from a run over many speed bumps and its silent!

I had a weird annoying rattle too, and I just popped off my covers and the passenger side was really loose and the driver side used another 1/2 turn.

Will post back if it works.

I'll also take a closer look to see if there's a bolt towards the firewall too that I could tighten on either sides, if anyone knows.

To check back, it worked. No creaks now behind the dash.
Hope this helps others with the annoying creaks from "behind the dash"
