I first noticed oil on the garage floor. Dealer replaced the RMS. A month or so later my car started to make what sounded like a clown horn. They said the oil separators was causing a build up of pressure which then caused the RMS to fail again.

everything is labor intensive. Dealer was going to charge 5k for the oil separators and 5k for the RMS.

It could be just waiting for parts ??

I'm in Canada, everything will naturally cost much more than US. I will update next weekend for dealer's estimate.

I don't think it is rear seal failure. There are bunch of things above back of the engine running of camshafts, and failure of any seals on those could look just like that because of the gravity

i can’t say for sure about others, but my RMS definitely failed… and the car hasn’t leaked a drop of oil since replacing.

I am to get my diagnostic results this coming Monday (after they have delayed looking into my issue for 2 weeks due to their work volume backlog)

Cool photos. Did you have air/oil separators replaced? What was the root cause of RMS replacement in your vehicle's case?

does this seem like a RMS Leak? My thought would be that it would be coming out if the bottom, seems pretty high up, but could be wrong. Also the rear crankcase cover with seal is showing as being discontinued. So not sure how to fix this… lol

One last update ... on cost estimates.

I am in Canada and out of orig. factory warranty btw. Dealer quoted me:

15 hrs (roughly 3 days) x $170 shop rate = $2,550 Cdn + 13% taxes on labor alone
parts of around $400 + taxes for the RMS
(Tech will evaluate the oil separators when he opens up the tranny/engine. If they need to be replaced along with any relevant parts, then parts & labors are extra)

Prelimin projected total $3300 Cdn. (or roughly $2,500 US)

I asked for any breaks but was not given any.

Car will be at dealer for about 4 days (3 days for repair and probably 1 day for the tech to test drive)

While not cheap, US$2,500 is not terrible for a RMS. CAD$170/hr shop rate is cheap.

My 2019 E63S AMG is in the shop for the second time for oil leak. Rear main seal replaced about a year ago. Now they’re telling me it’s oil separator failure. I have CPO coverage until December 2023 but am being told this will not be covered. How did you get them to agree? It’s aggravating that they don’t want to cover this since it seems to be a common problem.

My service guy is super helpful. I was very fortunate. I honestly didn’t push them too much on this. I let them take their time with trying to figure out a way to make this repair happen. I only expressed my frustration and to ask them to help me out with this considering the rms was already fixed a few months before (under warranty) before it failed again due to the oil separators.

Is the new oil leak also the RMS?

Looks like per earlier posts, the seal and separators should be done at the same time

mini update on my RMS repair ....

My car is currently with the dealer and they have inspected the oil separators with no problem, so they have advised me of not to replace them and simply doing the seal as that should fix the oil leak. The car will remain with them as they have to wait for some bolts to be flown in from Germany and will likely take two weeks time.
