Wagon trunk closing automatically

Wondering what is going on with my trunk closing on me twice and once on my daughter's head while loading up the cargo area. Seems like each time this has happen I have had the key in my pocket but pretty sure I did not accidentally brush up against car or anything to set it off. I am also pretty sure the 2021 wagon no longer has the hands free foot kick sensor like my old wagon had as i can not locate one under bumper as well as dealership said it has been eliminated like the seat folding from rear doors. Maybe there is another sensor causing this sudden unexpected closure someone can point to or explain how to avoid this from happening again before someone gets hurt.

Thanks,
Peter

My wife's '21 wagon has the automatic closing via the free foot kicker sensor, etc.

sometimes the movement of your feet can create this hazard, aside from an obvious kicking motion. Therefore, you should be somewhat conscious of it

Like the other responders, I've had the pleasure of the door hitting me on the head because my foot activated the kick-sensor. Mine is a 2020, but I didn't see anything indicating that was removed in 2021.

Interestingly, relative to other cars I've owned, my e63 wagon doesn't have nearly the "backoff" threshold. It seems to keep right on trying to close even after hitting my head, while my RS7's hatch will stop closing once it's hit my head.

Yes, I seem to hit my head a lot. Probably explains some stuff.

Your sensors are misadjusted. The 2021 wagon certainly has a keyless opening and closing via a foot kick under the bumper. Additionally, if there is an obstruction (up or down) the tailgate will stop until activated again.

I used to think the kick to close was one of the worst features on my wagon, until I realized it has only made me a stronger man. A man who is now invincible to any sort of attack to the back of my head.

(BTW and ICYMI) To prevent yourself from getting hit in the head, two quick presses of the lock button will turn off your key. Key off = no kick to close.

Agree
kick in the head and closed trunk is a better value proposition than trunk opening immediately after being closed….happened on S-class

Thanks for that. Every time I wash it I have to remember to put the key far enough away, otherwise it kept locking and unlocking and the mirrors flapping like some elephant's ears. Now I can just turn off the remote.

Yes me too ,
Perhaps to HBerman's point something might be wrong with my car as I am kicking like a hyenas and nothing happens except with key in pocket sometimes but rare trunk will open (not sure if it matters if car is locked or not), closing is more often when not expecting a good hit on the head before it re-directs. I can not find any sign of a bumper sensor under car or where exactly there could be a "sweet" spot to kick to. The key fob trunk button requires a very firm push to open/close so I doubt very much it is accidentally being triggered in my pocket. On my past 2016 E350 wagon I gave up kicking for fear of embarrassment

I kick under the bumper below the right middle parking sensor. Works pretty reliably for me across various Mercedes cars.

For my tailgate to work reliably I touch the top of my right foot on the bottom of the right diffuser fin. Occasionally it will ignore me and I have to try it a second time. Once in a great while (usually when I'm washing it) it will trigger even though I didn't tough the diffuser fin.
My E63S can be overly sensitive sometimes with identifying objects in its surroundings. Once it was convinced someone was in front of it and it started a panic stop. Luckily no one was behind me. I've now turned off that feature.

I can't get the hatch to open to save my life with the kicker. I will try it in the garage to try to master this dance move. Otherwise, I look like a complete moron at the grocery store - usually carrying WAY TOO MANY THINGS (because I have this amazing feature...) and then after flailing around kicking my car 20 times, I have to set all my crap down and open the hatch with my hand.

As I was getting down on the ground with flash light to look again for any sensor under right diffuser or right center parking sensor with key in pocket trunk opened to my surprise but can not for my life repeat that process and can not see any sensor unless it is one in the same as the parking sensor(s) which I would not think so. Next time at the MB dealership I will ask them to take a look and see if they can adjust or replace sensor, perhaps the sensor is in the key fob itself?

I don’t understand what’s wrong with you guys?
I just got hit by trunk once, while back with E550. That was enough.
Ever since all of my MBs open/close the trunk with no issues.

I would suggest you bring it in and have the tech readjust the sensitivity of your trunk closer and if available, α software update that may consist α sensor update.
