Update: it was leaves in the active grille shutter causing the CEL. Removed them and light went off.

They said they would have to charge me a $150 diagnostic fee to do so.

Is this just a crappy dealer?

Why would I need to pay a few to have a car scanned that’s under warranty?
Crappy dealer, normal for MB. Under warranty = no cost to consumer for covered items. CEL is indication that a covered item needs to be evaluated at the manufacturer’s cost.

I had that happen to me Vin Devers Autohaus of Sylvania Ohio would not look at my factory warrantied car unless I paid them minimum 2h up front diagnostics fees. I called my home dealer's service advisor and he said "Sorry they are being jerks - if you don't mind the quickest thing to do is pay it and send me the invoice we'll cover it all, don't worry" and they did.

Crappy dealer - Vote with your wallet and post who it is so we can vote with our wallets too.

Edit: The best dealer in the world is Mercedes-Benz Oakville Autohaus

I would get MBusa involved so they know this dealer is screwing their loyal customers and it’s on factory b2b warranty just to scan and delete the code. I would walk into that dealer and ask to speak to the GM and see what see says.

That is why it's kind of odd this same dealer who did that for free before would try to charge me here. I will just take it to my normal dealer and hopefully they will scan the CEL for free.

Bottom line....I've had a ton of BMW's the last 7-8 years (M6 Gran Coupe, F90 M5, F95 X5M, etc.) and ended up coming back to Mercedes just to try them again (did a ton of high end Benzes back in mid to late 2000's but then switched to BMW). The entire ownership experience with Mercedes has been horrible from day 1 with this car.....from the selling dealer to the service. I'll be going back to BMW and staying for good once I get rid of this car. It is what it is...
it is not brand specific
it is dealer specic .There are a lot of bad BMW dealers

Sorry for the experience, but it's par for the course. MB recruits dealers out of the crew of flunkies that couldn't cut the mustard as Kia dealers.

Sorry to hear. It happens. And it's exactly why I've had Mercedes and not BMW for the past 20 years. Just flip the brand lol. My wife and I had our hearts set on a BMW for a long time. When our old car broke (Ford) we didn't fix it, we clipped the 3-series "executive special" advertisement for the new car deal we wanted from that weeks newspaper and headed straight to the BMW dealer with our checkbook. We had this planned for the next time our car broke. So we show up in a rental car with our baby in tow ready to buy a car and drive it off the lot ASAP. The BMW process was so horrible and we were treated like such **** we walked out. Appalled, went to another BMW dealer across town that same evening and the exact same thing happened! They were so snooty and condescending. We were not worthy. WTF. New family ready to buy sitting across the desk with a baby and a rental car and all the salesperson wanted to do was have us fill out paperwork and talk money and see if we had any before even seeing or touching or driving a car! So annoying. So we left again.

There was a Mercedes dealer just down the street so we hit that 3rd dealer that same evening. I was intent on buying a new car! I _needed_ and had planned for a new car. We walk up, I pull on the door and it was locked, They had just closed, we just missed them wasting all that time being baffled by BMW. We turned around and while walking back to the rental car carrying our baby in a car carrier a sales guy unlocks the door sticks his head out and calls after us "HEY! HI! Can I help you?!". I walk back to the door and tell him "I know nothing about Mercedes, I wanted this BMW (hand him the ad from the paper) - what Mercedes models do you have that are comparable?" He said "we're closed right now but give me your number and I'll call you in the morning."

So the next day he calls in the morning, I explain how our baby is sleeping, we can't make it out until later and have to co-ordinate with our rental car "Are you home right now? I can I swing by your place, I have a car to show you" "Uh, sure?" He brought a demo C230 Kompressor Sedan for a test drive took my wife and me out in it at our house so we didn't have to cart the kid around. We loved it. The price was right inline with what the BMW 3 series ad was, we said "This is it, Yes we'll take one." To save time he did up all the paperwork at the dealer that afternoon, and said not to worry about signing anything until our car arrived. He sent for a brand new C230 to be brought in the next day from another dealer. When it was prepped he picked us up from our home, brought us to the dealership where we signed everything and drove home in our new Mercedes. AND he gave us a Mercedes pedal car for our baby for when they grew up! He had guys take it off the wall where it was hanging in the showroom while we were signing stuff and brought it over. It caused quite the stir, other customers all watching, so perfect, so perfect. We bought many cars from that salesman until he moved on. He was great.

I've since switched dealers (that dealer's sales was great their service was meh) and found an even better dealer where the service is just ridiculously as good and the sales guy rocks too. On my wife's last car the salesman drove docs to her at the nail salon to sign LOL. She was going to go in anyway later "Where are you? I'll bring them to you". lol

I'll never try to buy a BMW again. It was just that awful. They were complete jerks. They kept wanting me to fill out credit aps to pin me or the money down, kept talking about 5 series (way out of our budget) and kept droning on talking and talking. I was like "Just show me some 3 series" "We don't have that one." "What ones do you have?" "I'll have to look." Ummmmmmm I can see them from my chair you idiot. "Oh those are <forget the excuse>" (and who cares just show them to me anyway!) - They kept talking up the 5 series and I had to keep redirecting "We just want the 3 series "executive" special (pointing at the ad)" "We don't' have those" "THEN WHY'D YOU RUN THE AD?" It was infuriating. No one was listening and they made us feel like we were poor and it was an HONOR to qualify for one of their wonderful cars but who would want a lowly 3?
****off.
