Will an EVM or DLM Void my CPO Warranty?

Just curious if either the EVM(Exhaust Valve Module) or DLM(Digital Lowering module) will void my warranty? I just recently bought my 2019 S213 and don't want to void the warranty quite yet.

I know certain dealers handled things differently and it can even come down to the service rep, but this is only in the situation where things do technically void the warranty.

I also know some brands may be approved and won't void warranties, is there a situation such as that with MB and RENNTech or maybe weistech?

I'm just excited that it is so easy to both be able to control ride height(and not have it be permanent) as well as control how loud the exhaust is so easily and to the fullest extent. So, looking forward to do both these little mods, but want to hold off for a little while if MB will know i used them(as in they leave a trace) and if it'll void my warranty. Also 2nd part of the question, should i stick with RENNtech when buying these 2 items? Or are there other companies that make versions of the same thing for half the price and same quality?

Again I apologize for what may seem like well known questions I am new to MB, I've had several fun german cars, but this is my first MB, and I love it!

The exhaust valve module for sure won't (just so you know RENNtech modules is basically ASR modules that got licensing in USA to sell in USA as RENNtech, they are essentially the same thing except for branding and price), for those modules, you can always set it back to factory then unplugging it before bringing in for service, the suspension module however I am not sure, someone else will have to answer that question.

thanks for getting back to me and letting me know. Is there anyone in the states that sells the ASR one? Or if not, did you buy and have them ship to the US? If so how long did it take?

Yes. And yes.

Literally any mod you do to the car from air filters to apparently different size wheels and tires could void your warranty.

if you have a blinker that’s put they’ll probably cover. If your $30K trans takes a poop, you’ll have a fight on your hands.

I guess it also depends on the state, most likely the exhaust valve module won't void the warranty if set back to default then have it disconnect because from what I heard, it is not traceable, plus it doesn't really make sense for any warranty to be voided as all it does is to keep the exhaust valves fully opened (when the fully opened is pressed) instead of partially open in the stock setup when at low RPMs despite the PE being activated.

I believe you can order directly from ASR, and they do now shop to your country from Germany, you could also try emailing them at info@asr-component.de

Reason why I suggest it is because some forum members here have success with it, I guess just shoot them an email and see what they say, the current world wide situation might be affecting that.

Not really sure what you mean. ASR will not ship exhaust modules to the US because they have an agreement with Renntech not to do so.

There are ways around it....but no one has been getting these shipped directly from ASR to the US.

That is not what I read before, those forum members I mentioned previously was from the USA and they had it shipped no problem but that was almost a year ago so things certainly has a possibility to be changed. I mean, it doesn't hurt to try asking them with an email, worse thing is they reply with no or not reply at all.

In that case though, OP could also order from one of the resellers in Germany or maybe even resellers in Austria. I guess just make sure they are reputable though. Another method which it just randomly came up in my head but not sure if it will work would be to ship to a forwarding service and then have it ship to USA.

I did emailASR to ask if they would ship to the US, and as another member mentioned they replied that they could not send them to the US due to their deal with RennTech.

there are ways around it, but probably not worth it. You’re going to spend more on shipping, possibly have delays with customs, and at the end of the day save very little, or just order from RennTech, and have the support as well as installation instructions in English.

Thanks for confirming OP, sorry to hear that it didn't work out. It was strange that some forum members had it successfully shipped to USA not too long ago but since you were able to confirm that as of today, they don't ship it there anymore our next course of action is to find alternatives. Is not that I don't believe in what the previous forum member in the previous post said, I was just simply curious why someone from the USA was able to get it done not too long ago. Sorry for the confusion.

If either of those mods can be tied to a failure of the car that you are trying to warranty MBUSA will 100% not cover that repair. They won't void your entire warranty. Only time a warranty is completely voided is if the car is salvage or if the car was used for non street use.

Additionally if the mod is discovered for whatever reason the car can be flagged. And regardless of Magnusson Moss Law, the dealer can do whatever they want in the setting of mods to your car and warranty service - each dealer can be different in handling these issues. It'll be up to you to fight on your behalf if you feel the dealer is inappropriately denying any non related warranty repair upon the discovery or flagging of a mod such as this. In my experience as time marches forward, dealers are becoming less friendly to those with modifications and warranty repairs. $0.02

buyer beware with mods.

In every case I've read about here once a car is flagged the owner has no recourse. I've seen talk of lawyers but in reality it would be a steep uphill battle. Car manufacturers have a team of lawyers on staff that would make any legal action crazy expensive.

1000000000%

once your car is flagged, every repair from changing a wiper blade to swapping engine mounts must be approved by the supervisor.

All SA’s are under intense pressure to report any mods, their jobs depend on it. Yes of course you can be really cool with your SA but your yearly Christmas bottle of wine will not carry weight when they find out your SA has been approving $$$$$$ of repairs on a modded car. Also, my understanding is that the techs have a duty to look for software updates/tunes. They too must report to the system and upload readings.

bottom line, if your car is flagged your warranty is basically worthless and to complicate matters, every repair is scrutinized and the dealers just really don’t want to deal with it.

The good old days are gone boys. These new computers can read everything. Even if you take tune off before going to dealer, they can read that changes to software was made, and even gather history of afrs/boost/etc. so even with no “detectable” tune, they’ll see that something was off coincidentally between service visits.

One hack I have though about is third party warranty. The dealers get paid in the repair regardless, and with the car sales game in the dumpster any income is better than no income. My read is that SA’s and dealers would be more open to completing repairs on tuned vehicles IF that repair bill is paid by a third party and not the hand that feeds them. I haven’t tested the theory and don’t really understand how it all works, but once my OEM expires I’ll explore a third party before extending OEM.

Sorry about that OP, although I never have issues with the exhaust module on my 2017 C class for example hence why I said what I said in my initial post, and I have a few friends with E 53, E 63s, GLE 53, G 63, S 63, GT 63s, CLS 53, etc. granted they all revert to stock with the "3" or the "stock" button and then unplug it before bringing it to service.

All the module does (I think) is that it intersects and tells the actuator to fully open the exhaust valves, there is no hardwiring to the SAM or anything but I guess according to other forum members it may be possible to be detected and it is a YMMV with dealerships.

My final advice on this based on what everyone else mentioned is, keeping things stock especially if you have a factory warranty. I never had experience with the suspension module you talked about hence why I said what I said in the initial post.

So does the lowering module count as a ECU mod? Where does it write it's setting?
Because that would pretty much void many major engine work. Ugh.

I’ve heard several things, everyone has their own opinion And I understand ‘technically the either of these would void the warranty’ and the last thing I want to do is have a “flagged” vehicle…

but I was told by several people including ReNNTech that both these items, the ELM and EVM don’t leave a trace in the computers.

so as long as I return it to stock (both through stock selections and removing the devices) before bringing it in I believe I should be fine. I understand there is a risk, and I’m taking some other measures and precautions as to be extra careful, but I think I’ll be fine using these and removing prior to service/warranty work.

that’s amazing advice. Did you ask if they’ll cover the cost of your repair if they’re wrong?

I've heard many times of tuners/etc claiming their product is undetectable, yet they never actually back that up with a guarantee.

The EVM and ELM is control through the OBM port with the module, revert them back to factory before it does in for service for a piece of mind. Most dealer service department will not care if you had them on, unless either they are bad dealers to begin with or your on bad terms with that dealer. If your exhaust components fail, they can trace it if they believe it has direct result to the failure.
