Spark Plug Replacement Part 2

Hey all,
So, is $830 too much for spark plug replacement at dealership?

I’m in Canada… My dealer charged me:

2hrs labor @$171 cdn rate
8 spark plugs @ $20 per

thus, $500 cdn or approximately $375 US in converted currency. This was done 2 yrs ago. So, even adding 2 yrs of inflation adjustment of say 25%, then you should be looking at around $470 US

That does sound like a little too much for spark plugs, I would suggest shopping around.

I live in Upstate NY and I had the local Benz dealer (Keeler) replace the plugs in my 2016 CLS550 4 years ago. They charged me $800 plus tax. 6 months ago I had a local shop do it for $450 plus tax. So 4 years of inflation and the local German specialty shop did it for a little more than half price.

^ that makes more logical sense. We all know dealers will charge premium but double the price is a bit too much.

It is in the ballpark. As others have mentioned there is quite a range. 6 cylinder MB spark plug change at a dealer was running around $650 a couple of years ago, so $800-ish for two more cylinders a few years later is not out of the question. Depends on competition in your market. Call around. An indy can do this job easily and it does not affect warranty if a non-dealer does the work.

True. But the only other Benz dealer near me is about 2 hours away so Keeler knows most people are locked into their shop. Although that doesn't make up for the poor quality of their mechanics. Granted, their waiting room is really clean and they give you free bottled water and coffee if you're waiting (they used to give you donuts and other snacks, pre Covid) so I guess that drives up their cost of doing business. ROTFL. They also offer free loaner cars if you want one. A Benz dealer will also ONLY use Benz parts or, in the case of spark plugs, ones that come from the Benz parts dealer. That way if something is defective Benz will pay the dealer to replace it.

Sooooo, double the price for convenience? Some people are willing to pay for that and that's their target market. People with more money than time to spend.

Depends on the car. If they have to take apart half the intake just to get to the plugs then that seems reasonable. But I like to do it myself anyways just to make sure it's done right: a little dielectric on the coil boot to make sure it doesn't stick to the plug; inserted carefully so the gap doesn't accidentally get changed dropping it the hole; torqued with an actual torque wrench not psychically... you get the idea.

I just wanted to thank those of you who responded to my thread. By the way, the MB in question is a 2018 E63s Estate. Also, there is only one dealership in Boise and it appears that there is one indie that works on German cars so I'll call them on Monday and see what they'll charge.

E63
I just had plugs done on my 2018 e63s this last week. Cost from the dealer was a little over $800.00.

On my previous car - 2016 e63s with the M157, I seem to recall it being a bit cheaper ~$500. But the M157 is a different animal than the current M177.

I’ve also noticed the dealer labor rate is up since last year. About $170/hr. I’m in SLC so close market to Boise.
