E63 transmission issue - Car stalls in Drive Slips in Drive and Reverse S213 W213
Twice this week after a normal drive, car is at temp etc, I park and one time 10 minutes later, another time 1 hour later, get in the car, start it, fiddle getting organized for a minute or less, as soon as I put the car in Drive
LURCH-BANG! stall.
Feels exactly like a new driver dumping the clutch at idle.
I'm already going to the dealer for an early oil change Monday and I'm reporting this too. Car has 3,085kms on it.
It moves under its own power!
I brought it home today.
Something was definitely wrong with the first transmission. It was very wishy washy compared to the new one. The car feels like I got a shift kit installed. Night and day.
I went to the gym, worked out. When leaving “R” just revved with no movement. I thought I was out of it from my workout and that I did something wrong so I pushed P then up ro R again - still no movement only revving. I’m thinking am I in a huge rut? Something under a tire? Nope - so I pushed down to D no movement in D either, only revving. Screen is definitely showing R and D etc.
Turn car off, turn on, Select R car moves in reverse but over revving, it feels like riding the clutch. Move to D to drive away and same thing, needs more revs then normal to move forward. After 500m starts behaving normally. No more issues so far today.
Something’s up! I wonder what the dealer will say tomorrow.

Good point. I thought maybe?! So I tested this after you posted thinking I was an idiot. But no, even if I put the parking brake on manually in D or R it holds the car at idle and immediately releases the brake when I touch the throttle.
No issues for the rest of the day so I’m betting tomorrow I get the “can’t replicate customer complaint” which is fine by me, if it never ever comes back. But combined with twice stalling out when putting it in gear my gut says some adjustment or relearning or sensor is out. I just hope it’s not a long long intermittent road.
Looks like I won’t be modding anything any time soon. Also we will see if Mississauga has improved on their service (why I left them). If they haven’t, I’ll be going back to Oakville.
Oh man, I'm sorry. Make sure you get answers for both issues because they're not going away. Maybe this is why my car's been at port not for two months. Anyone else on here with a 2023?
@I.T. Guy has a 2023 Wagon and I have a 2023 Sedan. There's definitely more here. This hasn't happened to me, thankfully. But I'm really curious to find out what it turns out to be.
"Adaptation of wet clutch and transmission. Perform short test, no related fault codes present. Check software release of all drivetrain modules, all software up to date. Unable to duplicate any abnormal function. Perform adaptation of transmission wet clutch. Road test vehicle and perform gearshift adaptation. Note to customer, this vehicle has a wet clutch rather than a torque converter in the transmission which can have a noticeably firmer/harsher engagement when pulling away, particularly when cold."
Car was warm every time LOL.
Hopefully the adaptation did something and the problem never comes back.

No, when transmission hasn't adapted to the current driving mode then resetting the TCU brings it back to initial conditions. Then it will adapt to the driving mode. Adaptation works uniquely in each driving mode so having things work in Comfort may not yield the same parameters in Sport. It took about 3k miles before the shift parameters worked through on my wagon. It's fine now in Comfort or Sport mode. I can't even feel the gear changes above 2.
Well something happened that's good. It feels great now. So far so good. I don't know about the stalling or slipping problems yet but shifting and idling it's a lot smoother. Leaving from a stop a lot smoother too.
There was also a weird slight shudder when it would hunt up and down on the freeway as I slowed and sped up, that's completely gone too.
Car wouldn’t move under its own power again today. I videoed it.
Car warm off highway, come to a stop, go to leave still in D nothing but revs. Waved traffic by to take a video, R nothing, just revving, back to D nothing but revving. Turn car off and on, everything fine.

Wow! Dangerous! Sounds like the clutch is not engaged for some reason. Certainly an issue with the TCU. Any other lights on the dash? Is Parktronic engaged when this happens? Is the ESP light flashing? Was the Hold feature engaged with the brake? Sorry that you're experiencing this issue as you just had the car serviced and there was NTF reported on the condition.
UPDATE: I believe that one of the speed sensors is either defective or the connection to it is loose. There is one on each wheel. No telling which one is the problem.
