Radar Detector Mount

What are you gents using for radar detector mount in your e63s? Hoping I can find something small that maybe mounts off the rear view mirror.

Thanks

I ended up just using the included windshield suction mount for my R8 mounting it in the middle of the windshield underneath the mirror. At least for w213 I couldn't find a way to get power from the rear view mirror so my installer routed the power cable to the outlet in my passengers footwell.

anyone else have acoustic comfort package and notice the front censor on the radar detector is very weak? Most of the time it says the treat is coming from the side or back when its clearly the front while passing a speed limit sign. I rarely even see the front arrow go off.

the '14 E63S I traded in for my '19 had a built in radar system. The rear view mirror had it built in and some of the sensors were in the front bumper and if I remember correctly one sensor was installed in the rear . . .

I chose this one for 2 cars in the stable as no other good mount for mirror or such.
Just make sure you clean windshield really well and then use alcohol prep wipe.

Those that have hard wired to the fuse box, do you recall which fuse you tapped into? My car is under the cover for the winter but I'm seeing online that there are 2 fuse boxes. One on the drivers side and on on the passenger side. I'm thinking drivers side would be easier to access and snake a hard wire to but not sure which fuse to tap into?

I would like the radar detector to come on and off when the car is turned on and off

Thanks!

I too have the DC5 package that includes infrared glass. There is a wide rectangular area towards the bottom of the windshield in the middle that allows radiation to pass more freely, similar to the smaller area at the top of the windshield. I have a Uniden R8 and use the dual clear suction cup mount to mount the detector just above the top of the dashboard. It seems to work well in this position.

Does anyone both a dash cam and a radar detector installed? I feel like both of those would take up so much real estate on the windshield?

I have not done it yet, car is under a cover for the winter. From what I've seen there isn't an on/off fuse in the front and you have to go all the way to the trunk. I really don't want to do that!

Depending on which windshield options you have, the mounting locations are constrained.

I have the HUD, acoustic, sun/heat or whatever, options so there are only a few place where you can put a radar detector or fastpass and still have good signal through the windshield.

If you look at the car from in front under the right lighting conditions you can see the areas in the glass where mounting is possible.

I have my Uniden R3 mounted in the center of the windshield just above the dash. It is down low and out of my way and doesn't obstruct my view. It is wired to the fuse panel by the passenger footwell with the cable routed up inside the molding then along the top of the dash. Pretty clean.

Do you know by chance which fuse you used in passenger footwell? I've been looking for this information all over the place and I have not had any luck. If you know the fuse # that would be tremendous help!

Thanks man

I will try to get down there and have a look and maybe snap a photo. I do recall that it isn't a switched fuse. The R3 has auto power off, so I didn't worry about it, but I do try to make a habit of turning it off when I get out of the car anyway.

I have an R8 but I haven't even taken it out of the box. It looks like it has a bettery save option on it where it turns itself off after an hour if the car is stationary. I imagine this is what you do with yours.

Does it turn back on with the car or do you have to unplug it and plug it back in?

Thanks

In the case of the R3 I just tap the power button on the top. Pretty much a habit when I get in the car.

Gotcha. I'm just trying to avoid running the wires to the trunk... that seems to be the only spot for switched fuses that I've been able to find online.

Thought about maybe just also getting a longer cigarette lighter cable and plugging it into cigarette lighter in passenger footwell and snaking cable around the passenger side door etc.

Finally got to the garage to take photos. My car is left hand drive, so the fuse box cover is in the right hand front passenger footwell.

The fuse location I chose is shown in the next photo. I used a fuse insert with its own fuse carrier and then that is connected to the radar detector power wire which also picks up the ground from the lug in the photo. The wire is routed up under the molding and comes out on the right side of the dash. I then just tucked it in along the top of the dash next to the windshield. This is pretty clean because my detector is mounted with the suction cup attachment right above the dash in the center of the car.

Thank you sir, I appreciate it. Just to double check, this wasn't a switched fuse so to speak though, right? You have your radar detector enabled to turn auto off and you are turning it manually on every time you start your car?

That is correct, not a switched fuse. I manually turn on/off the detector and rely on the auto shutoff feature for those times I forget.

I do have an adjustable low voltage disconnect that I could have installed that would disconnect the radar detector if the car's battery voltage drops below some set level. But I've never installed it because its never really been an issue.

I finally got to hard wiring my radar detector in. Do you by chance have a photo of how yours is mounted on the windshield? Mine is down pretty low and in the center by the rectangle pass through box like yours but my double suction mount from R8 makes it angle up and kind of looks word. Not sure if it would be able to pick up radar from the rear the way it sits. Maybe I need to play with my mount a little.

THanks man
