You talking about the inset hood? It's normally a coupe styling cue. The E63 got a coupe-like front end (everything fore of the A-pillars) to signal sportiness.

A majority of the major components of the E63 from the A-pillar forward are unique to the E63 and are not shared with any other W213 models. The same is true of the C63 compared to other W205 models.
The front of the E63 (and C63) is made wider and longer to accommodate the V8 engine and related components. The front of the E63 is about 2 inches wider and about 2 inches longer than all other w213 sedans.

Haha...yep, terrible car. I'm paraphrasing the best comment about hybrids I heard the other day. Hybrids add an electric motor, so you have enough power to move around the heavy battery.
