Unhappy Weird clunk noise when shifting from Park to Drive

I have a 2018 e43 with 20k miles on it. Once in a while I hear a clunk type of noise when I put my car from park to drive, but I never hear it happen 2-3 times in a week usually once a month. For example a couple days ago I was in the drive through, I put the car in park, then into drive and I heard a clunk. I was able to recreate that clunk noise in the same exact spot when i put the car to park and drive again. Today when I was at home my car was on the drive way reverse parked, when I put the car in drive I heard that same clunk. do you know why this could be. The car drives and shifts perfectly. I have attached a video of this noise.

Has the trans ever been dropped for any type of maintenance or repair? Did you buy this car new? If not, what's it's backstory if any

Hey, from my knowledge the trans has never been dropped for any maintenance or repairs. The Carfax was clean on this car, I bought it at 16k miles and is now at 20k. I have talked to someone on social media with a e43, and said he has this same "issue", and others said they haven't had this issue,

This is not often reported on here, this type of engagement but known to different Mercedes spanning across models.

my thought would be - when the driveline is engaged into drive - what is that shock affecting - trans/engine mounts (car barely has any miles on it but should be looked at), drive shaft hangar, mct issue (this can be re adapted easily)

That is a good start for sure, especially the adaptation part, worth looking into.

Does the E 43 have a MCT or TCT?

Ah, good call. I wonder if it deserves a fluid analysis- drop the pan etc and fluid change

I wonder if OP should just change the fluid, since it is every 5 years or 50,000 miles whichever come first... I think?

Yeah it has been probably 5 years. Are there any signs that would show signs of getting the fluid changed. The car shifts perfectly, i just once in a while run into that clunk noise when going from park to drive.

It could be the transmission mount as forum member PeterUbers suggested : )

Ya it is the same transmission in many MB models, it is the torque-clutch transmission (TCT).

About time to change it, as it is time based although people like to do the mileage based, fluid does expire is the point. Usually a low fluid situation also causes this, however, if there is no leaks and you said you didn't change it, chances of it low is slim.

Another thing to do next is scan the vehicle if there are codes with a scanner that is capable of reading MB codes.

Don't forget about the transfer case and the front differential fluid as well. Lift the vehicle up and check for play for all the bushings, hangers, mounts.

Most likely benz, do yall think this will be an easy fix as simple as changing fluids or something big and expensive? I’m honestly stressed since i don’t want this to be a major issue. My warranty with carmax just ended, i did take the car to them and they were saying the car is good and the only noise they hear is the parking pawl which makes an engaging noise. but they were unable to recreate the “clunk” noise.

Best way is to lift the car up and someone listen for the sound engaging those gears from the bottom of the vehicle.

i have had this happen a couple of times. i have to pull in then reverse into my parking spot so sometimes i have had this happen when i'm too quick on going to R. always stopped, but i have thought maybe the rpms were still a little higher than idle and that caused it or something

i actually just had my front and rear diff oil and transfer case fluid changed, will report back if it doesn't happen anymore. almost certain it's the transmission but who knows. transmission fluid will be changed in about a year at 6 years

I get an occasional clunk on my 2018 E63 wagon. Approach a stop going real slow and then taking off and it'll clunk. Both motor mounts have been replaced and I had a good shop do a complete inspection and nothing found. Transmission fluid has been changed. I'm at about 40K miles.
