Coolant Temperature E43

Hey guys i own a 2018 e43 amg. Usually my coolant temperature stays around halfway. Today i noticed that when i was on the highway my coolant temp became colder, when i got off the highway and onto city roads my coolant temp went back to the middle where is usually is. I don’t know if this is normal since i’ve never paid much attention to it. I have attached my coolant temp gauge of when it was cold on the highway and on the city road a minute later where it went back to normal.

Normal. More cooling while at higher speeds on the highway due to more air movement - this effect may be more aggressive in colder weather.

As said, it is normal. Do keep in mind that the gauge is still doctored.

Reason why it is doctored it is because in the past, people complained about the gauge kept fluctuating and thought something is wrong.

I am not sure if the workshop menu will show real time and actual temperature worth looking and checking. Otherwise only through scanners.

Thank you, so i should be good. Does that mean the gauge is not accurate or made to please owners of Mercedes to prevent overthinking.

not just MB, many makes have doctored gauges and only really start to move higher when the temperature is too hot.

3 guages to keep in mind. Engine oil temperature is not doctored at least not as doctored as coolant and the 3rd one is transmission fluid temperature.

Very true, what i have done i was going through my phone camera roll looking for that little gauge for the coolant and it seems that my coolant used to stay either at the middle or a fingernail passed the middle which is the hottest my coolant still gets now. I am assuming it stays around that area. But does coolant temp change by a couple degrees? I also ask this because today i noticed my coolant went a fingernail passed the middle(which it has done that in the past which i saw in my camera roll) and then a little bit after it went back to exactly on half. so is this normal behavior for my coolant gauge to change by a fingernail on daily use or is it supposed to stay at one spot on the gauge and not move at all. During this drive i drove in sport + where the coolant went up by a fingernail and in comfort where it went to half again. Also i didn’t push the car at all in sport +. Sorry for the information dump. Also my car has no issues getting the coolant to get to optimal temps when i turn it on.

I am not as observant as you, and you being observant is a good thing, I mean it is good to find a problem (if there is a problem) and fix it before it gets worse. I have a C-Class and not the E-Class so quite a different car.

I know we share the same motor the m276, and a lot of the same parts except for the turbos. I think we should have a similar coolant system. Next time you go for a drive try to reach around 100 mph and stay there for 20 seconds to see if your coolant temp will go down from the usual middle mark.

I just realized you mentioned 100mph, I sadly might not be able to help as I don't think I ever reached more than 150 kph here in Canada as the speed limit is 100 and 110 kph here, at 100mph so about 160kph is stunt driving.
