Fix: replace broken air vent

Patient: 18 E63s Edition 1

left vents, the slats were broken on the right vent. Bought a vent from a totalled w213 on ebay for $30.

It is fairly straight forward

Need to remove the top dash cover which pops out.

This then exposes 3 slots where the screws are at. Remove three screws. Now most videos don't tell you this part, you have to leverage the metal arms from the screw portion to release the display.

Otherwise the chances of breaking the display are extremely high. Once the latches release, the display just falls. So put a foam piece or be prepared to use you hand as a stop. It tilts so you are not holding the entire weight.

Disconnect 2 white electrical connectors, 2 lvds fakra connectors, 1 -4 pin fakra and 1 blue conne tor for ambient light.

Now the digital dash can be pulled out and set aside.

On to the center dash trim.

1st, remove the rubber trim on the right most side.

Once removed, loosen the ambient light cord. Now with a trim tool, pry the dash upwards some. This will require some effort but also patience. The dash is held by numerous insertion tabs.

once loosen, gently tilt the dash trim to disconnect the white starter connector AND two black ambient light connectors. once removed, dash trim can be removed

Now for the offender out of the car.

Each pair of vents are held in by 3 screws.

install new vent with the three screws and good to go.

Like new!

Bonus: I went ahead and tested if the cls450/e450 vents fit.

Answer is YES they do!

The only thing is that as you see, big holes for the other vent control. Easy fix...

From old vents, the knob can be removed. It is clips that i cut. Two additional screws and the knobs are in place.

Ideally, it is better to get an e coupe or cls trim...yes they fit and look, no vent control holes.

Anyway, the oem Carbon trim installed back in the car and all buttoned up.

The end...

Great work. Love stuff like this and I’m sure we will see a lot more write ups and actual videos online of how to fix stuff on these cars. I plan to keep mine for a while and I like to try to fix stuff myself if I can.

since you got so deep in that thing, I wonder if the red start button from an AMG GT, GTR, Pro can fit the e63s... wanna try for us?

my guess is that it will fit since MB likes to keep costs down. The start button cut out is standard across most 18+ mb cars...

I can try but i would need that specific start button.

I think this one is definitely red in color.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/355030026046

This is cheaper alternative and I am pretty sure also red

https://www.ebay.com/itm/186853552340

Same Part Number - A 190 905 40 02

Do you know if the start button can come out from the front or if it's removed from the back only? Looks like it has to come out of the rear because of that plastic l bracket

great question

The button actually comes out the rear of the trim.

There are three tabs that hold the start button in place as seen in the picture.

i have to ask.

Every single 2019 AMG GT63s video shows the start button as white NOT red....Are we sure that the "Red" button" is OEM/stock?

EDIT: it is a AMG GTR start button and not a GT63s.

I would be more than happy to test ... someone get it out in my direction.

With that said, the LED in the start button is nothing special.

I thought that maybe GTS and GTC's are all red but I can't confirm. I know that GTR for sure is red as seen from a screen cap below

I think you would still have to take the trim off to to undo those clips from the back to release it though, huh? Or can you somehow pry the button from the front without taken the trim out?
