Looking to get back into owning another AMG

Hello all. I previously owned a 2014 E63 and was pretty active in the W212 AMG forum. Loved the power and the sound but couldn't get over the fear of the M157's propensity for scored cylinders. Yes, I did do the oil pump solenoid mod but by then was looking to move on regardless. Currently own a '22 M340xi. Love the car but absolutely miss having a V8. Am not looking for an F90 M5 as the only years I'm interested in are MY21+ which is currently out of my price range. With that being said, that leaves me looking at the MY18-19 E63S. I am well aware of the more common problems like RMS, cam magnet/sensor, and oil separator leaks as well as random misfires due to plugs/coils. That all being said, those of you that have previously owned the M157 equipped E63, how do you like the M177? Is it harder to work on vs the M157? When I owned my '14 E63, I replaced all the plastic turbo coolant lines, all 4 cam sensors and magnets, as well as one of the rear adaptive shocks.

I love the M177 over my old M157 for the same scary M157 Reasons. Cylinder scoring, bent rods, lower control arms, CPS Sensors wicking to ECMs, turbo coolant hose leaks, pano-creak, intercooler pump failures

I do enjoy the noises, low end torque, and tighter driving feel of the M157 over the M177.

I think the M177 has so many things sorted properly that even with the RMS/Oil Separators issue it is "worth it" to upgrade.

Hello! Recognize ya from the W212 forum IT Guy! So about the CPS wicking issue. I read that the issue is still present with the M177. Is this actually true?

Had both. w213 is leagues better than the W212 in every way imaginable.

I'm not the addressee but the oil in harness issue might be present as well but low to none reported cases so safe to say it is (mostly?) immune it is not a big deal if you install pigtails and kept replacing them when you see them with oil. The oil in harness is a problem in many MB engines.https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-c63s-...il-sucker.html

I have not read about any cases.
I'm sure it's possible but doesn't seem prevalent.

I've also had both and would concur, the 213 is better in every way.
Only niggles for me are the tyre hopping in cold weather, the vision looking out the drivers side window isn't great with the wider door pillar and the incredibly wide turning circle compared to the UK rear wheel drive only 212.
All things I can forgive for its interior and perfomance.

I ran the sacrificial pigtails on mine after replacing those components. Forgot to mention that I also had the water pump go at 70k. Caught it just in the time. The belt over the pulley was hanging halfway off the edge of it. How’s the 9 speed MCT compare to the previous 7 speed? I didn’t mind the previous one with the exception that I had to get used to its jerkiness at low speeds, especially when downshifting to a stop.

Jerkiniess is gone
Can predictably engage/disengage clutch with proper gas pedal application in slow speeds
But
I was so used to the M157 shift points it took three years of M177 ownership to finally feel like a maestro conductor again

While we are on this, it seems the pre face lift owners always say it's better in every way.
My facelift feels soft.
Is there a way to go stiffer? My 212 was on rails compared to the 213.

Dang, that’s rather interesting cause I too got used to the 7’s character with my W212. That being said, I’ve almost had a 2 year break from it with the ZF in my M340. So it shall be interesting to see how this 9 feels like.

Looks like forum member I.T. Guy has the answer to your question.

Haha, the first time mine wheel hopped backing up with the wheels turned literally scared the **** out of me. I thought I broke the front diff. Now, I just shake my head and accept it.

Yep. I think too it crab skids more than W212, especially when backing out and turning not even fully. The transmission is much less of a jerky mess at stop signs and parking lots, and doesn't buck like jackass when it gets confused.

Back in the day I ran a spooled 9" on the street so when our cars do the ltitle hop/scrub it reminds me of that car and my youth and fond memoriies.

I like it.
