Has anybody figured out how to hardwire their radar detector in the 2012 CLS??
Guys, I am looking for an ignition-keyed power source that I can tap into so I can hardwire my V1. I of course only want the detector on when the car is on.
My E55 had a fuse panel on the right end of the dash, accessible when the door was open. Owners manual on the new CLS says there are no fuse panels inside the cabin of the car.
I am all ears for tips on hardwiring my V1, as I have a distinct feeling that radar protection will be essential with this rig!!!
Best regards to all.

I pulled the trim piece off behind the rear view mirror and used my volt meter to find a switched 12 volt source. I don't remember off hand which wire it was but if nobody else chimes in I will pull it off again and take some pictures for you.

I am new to the forum and I too am looking for a way to hardwire my radar detector to my 2012 cls 63. Readytoroll, how did you pop off the trim behind the mirror. And if you could remember which wire you used or have a photo that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

This is NOT meant to offend at all, but if you are driving a $100k car, why not spend $2k and get a dedicated remote radar/laser system like the Escort 9500ci? Built in, with a display where you want it, and with laser diffusers (that have saved me more than once). And the best part is that you never have to worry about hiding it when you park the car.
Give it some thought.
BTW - I own a V1 also. Sits in a drawer for friends to borrow on long trips.

I'm just pretty handy with a volt meter. Sorry I took so long getting these pics to you guys.
If you notice I drilled a tiny hole for the radar detector wire to go into the trim piece. The trim piece pulls off very easily.
Once you get it off you will see a three wire connector all the way to the left (on the drivers side) It has a grayish/bluish wire, brown and white wire. The white wire is your ground and the grayish/bluish wire is your postitive.
There is a slight delay after you shut your car off for the switched source to lose voltage, but it does turn off shortly after shutting off the car.
Another thing I like about this voltage source is as soon as you open the car door you can here the radar detector power up. I like this as it reminds me that the detector is on and I'm "Ready2roll"
Hope this helps you guys out!

I had a V1 for years and loved it, until it started falsing all the time. Turns out the DOT in my region installed micro-radar units all over the highways for monitoring traffic flow (not for speeding violations) which set it off frequently. As a result, I also got the 9500ci, which has a GPS component that stores and ignores these, along with other sources that can cause falses. Now it rarely goes off unless there is a cop around who is clocking people. It also has anti-laser, which has saved me many times.

Hardwire to Cls 63
Hi ready2roll. Did you solder the wires to the gray and white wires? If not how did you chose to attach. Just checking before I go to work. I got my hardwire cord today. Also did you use an inline fuse? My guess is that it is not necessary

I chose to solder mine, but you can use a wire tap such as the one in the attached picture. I also didn't use an inline fuse. Probably should have, but I don't use one in any of my cars and never had an issue.

Look at this as an alternative to hardwiring. It also gives you the ability to have your radar turn on only above certain speeds.
I love it and did it myself....

Digging up old thread but just confirming that this method works, as shown by Ready2roll. Thanks guys.

Wanted to update this. I installed mine about 5 weeks ago and now the radar is not picking up consistent power. Sometimes it turns on sometimes it doesn't. Thoughts?

IT WORKS!!
Hey all,
I literally just made an account to post that this method works on my 2013 CLS550. I have a V1 hard wired in and the power cuts off after exiting the vehicle.
I also bought a pre-made tap for this from here:
https://store.blendmount.com/mobile/mirrortap-mtx-series-power-cord-rj-11-2-amp-inline-fuse-with-military-grade-taps-p3513.aspx
a bit pricy, but it was a 5 minute install from pulling off the cover, drilling the hole in the cover, tapping the wire and putting the cover back on.
I did secure my tap with the included zip ties, have you checked if the wires have lost contact?

Does anyone know what gauge the gray and white wires behind the rear view mirror? I want to make sure I buy the correct taps. I’m considering positap connectors as they are supposedly better than the t-taps? Anyone have experience?
