DIFFERENT TREADS BUT SAME size/load?
hey all,
i bought a set of 19's (summer set) but sold them so now i put back my stock amg 17's (winter set)
after switching from my 19's back to my stock C32 wheels (with th OEM pilot sport tires - NOT PS2) i realised my right rear tire is pretty much out of TREAD (i realised that b/c my alignment is a bit off due to it- i hope thats it at least)
anyway, i was wondering if i can use a MICHELIN PILOT SX MXX3 tire (laying around my garage for some reason with very reasonable tread) with 3 other pilot sports on my car... the size and load and all are the exact same as my OEM tires EXCEPT THE TREAD PATTERN IS straight and the OEM SPORTS are V-like... any suggestions as if i can use this for the time being (till i put my winter tires on these rims - and buy all new rims for the summer s i wont have to worry about next season)

people on these forums can get **** on the subject of mixing tires, but the truth is sometimes your forced to. I do it all the time and ive never had a problem, living near nyc **** happens to your tires and ur not gonna go buy one brand new tire for 3 otheres that are almost worn.

I have almost the exact same question. Both rear tires on my CLK55 are bald, but the fronts are fine....go figure. I don't want to buy Pirelli's for the rear. Can I buy different rear tires, like Michellin and have Pirelli's up front? Will that be bad in some way?

all tire shops will tell you it is bad, but i have done that too, when my pirelli's were toasted with 7k, i put michelin pilots on the rear and left the pzeros up front. I had no problems with handleing at all. These cars have pretty sophisticated traction systems, and i have tried hard to lose control in an empty lot seeing if it would be unsafe and i have not had problems.

)so, get ready cause i'll be selling:
(2) 225/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport tires
(1) 245/40/17 Michelin Pilot Sport tire
(1) 245/40/17 Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 tire
all have at least 50% tread left (e-mail for pics), you should see it in classifieds shortly (once i get my winter tires)...

Well I decided to go with Tire rack for my order. I found two of the cheapest tires I could find. They are Sumitomo size 245/40 ZR17 for $72 a tire!!
Dear God I hope they don't explode over 80MPH!!
To be honest I'm alittle scared because I've never heard of this brand before. I only plan on having the CLK for 2 more months so whats the worst that could happen?

ur not gonna have the best traction in wet weather but im sure you will be ok. They wont explode above 80, but your car will be a little more tail happy since sumitomos are a harder compound, but your car has esp as long as you dont drive like a total ******* trying to lose control your not gonna even notice

I only have about 2 months left so I guess I can try to behave myself. I guess I could have gotten the all weather tires for about $10 per tire more, but I wanted the cheapest just to hold me over. It will suck when it rains. No more drag racing at stop lights.

different tires can be very detrimental to your cars' ultimate handling and responsiveness ..... not to mention the different tread designs evacuate water at different rate and differences in sidewall deflection rates .... all of this can add up to a bad handling car and sometimes even dangerous in emergency manuevers

i dont know, obviously tire gurus are gonna suggest new tires, it is the reccomended procedure. All I wanted to say was that living in nyc, **** happens tires get destroyed and you never have a matching set unless you are rich and like to waste money on new tires all the time when ur other ones are half or more worn lol.
Right now i have kumho ecsta 712's in the rear of my 500 and eagle f1's in the front and there is no issues at all with my cars handling.

I've mixed tires for years. My recent mix was falken 502's in back and Potenza's in the front. Before that, Falken azenis in back and dunlop fm901 in front. Both sets the car ran fine. And i even ran the dunlops in the back with the falkens (azenis and 502's) in the front. The falken/potenza mix was actually better handling that having the potenza all the way around.
But yeah, it may not be super to do so, but it will get the job done. And I'm sure no one goes out when it's raining and tries to hit the speed govenor or see if they have one
But then again I'm sure there are a few :p 
But yeah, it works, but I will admit that I try to keep the tires matching when I can.
Oh and sumitomo tires aren't the worst tires you can get, I got a Segura tire on my dads wagon right now (3 different tire types on that one :p ), so I wouldn't worry about them tires.
