Can You Powder Coat on Chrome?

.....have chrome Lorinser RS6s.... and would like to powder coat them all black to match my car if possible.... have heard good things and not so good things about it..... btw, chrome is in perfect condition, not even a scratch.... anyone know of a good shop in San Diego that would do a good job for a reasonable price?

If you are going to powder coat the wheels to match the company usually sandblast the wheel down to the metal getting rid of all the finish. Then they prep the wheel and powdercoat the wheel to the desired finished.

You can technically powdercoat chrome because its still metallic so the paint will stick to the metal but im not sure what would happen. Like SAserg said you sandblast stuff down to the bare metal and then it makes for a perfect powdercoating. Sandblasting is easy and shouldnt cost you very much at all, dont get ripped off.

I am actually getting ready to do the same thing.

This is what I was told from my powder coating shop... I have to get them sand blasted but not down to the metal... all you really need to do is light blast so the chrome gets scuffed up and the powder will bite to the chrome.

The fact that we both have Lorinser's the chrome is top quality and we don't really have to worry about the chrome flaking off at any time.

You can powdercoat over chrome, but most shops will strip the surface for better adhesion, creating a rougher surface for the powdered material to bond to when heat cured.

I have a friend with a show quality Harley and he has powdercoated over a few chrome pieces for contrast. The coated pieces look good, but don't know how long they will last if they are in a high contact area or exposed to extreme heat for a duration. Looks cool though.
