Luke: 225/40 vs 235/40?

Hi Luke (and all)

When I swapped my standard alloys for 18/8J ET31 AMG's and installed Eibach springs (plus thinner suspension washers in the front) on my E240, I was recommended to use 225/40's instead of the commonly used 235's for the front (the 9J rears are the manuf. recommended 265/35's although I was also recommended to use 255's instead).

1) Grateful if you could tell me what the pro's and con's are of using the 225's instead? Particularly whether there are any dangers in doing so.

2) Do you think the 225's (and 255's which I did not follow) could have been recommended for the clearance (since the Eibachs and thinner washers had lowered the front end more than the AMG's) or was it because of the less powerful 2.4l engine?

Obviously, the 225's gives a lighter and seemingly more responsive steer but having used P-Zero Rosso's (with their "flusher" fit), the rims are less protected from the pavement....

Many thanks.

the 235/165 combo is actually taller than the 225/255 combo and will alter the effected gear ratio thus hurting the accleration. ....the 225/255 combo is the same 25" diameter as the original tires on your car

Thanks Luke

Next is to find a new set of rims to give it a little more individualism - in my town, AMG's seem to be standard issue! Also, although the AMG's appear to best complement the less aggressive design of the W210 (pre-99), I'm still not content with the understated appearance. I've explored Lorinzers, Brabus (V's & VI's) & OZ's but find they look out of place (yes, I know many others are very happy with these ). I've also tried the one's in the Tirerack system but there doesn't seem to be much choice of 18" with similar widths. Any suggestions on something that looks a little more sporty, without detracting from the lines of the W210, Luke and others?

BTW, does Tirerack do mailorders outside of the US?

Thanks HigHal

Seems you get what I'm on about. However, in 2-D, the Carlsson 2/6 seem to be only a slight improvement on the AMG Style II I have (added shimmer, bolts and extra contours) - may be it's a little more outstanding in the flesh? Do you have them on yours (would love to see some pics on a lowered E-class, preferably white)?

Found the attached pic on the web with HigHal's suggestion - the same body style & colour as mine but unfortunately not lowered (BTW, is that yours HigHal?). What do you guys out there think? Still too mellow?

I think the Brabus MonoIV are good a good compliment but looks a little outdated now and is too similar to the standard OEM 17"s that the newer models had.

Sorry guys, I know I'm fussy but I got stuck with a white one which is in itself a challenge to try beef up ........(I was thinking about the Honda Type-R's and White Mitsubishi Evo's when I bought it!). More suggestions welcomed!

That's not my car. I have a c320.
I think rims like carlsson 2/6 would look really nice on your e class, try http://www.thewheelsupply.com/showca...aspx?make_id=1
there are couple E class with different rims, but they are mostly similar to your OEM. I think there's one with HRE in 19, looks pretty nice. I think if you should go with spoke rims (like brabus Vi) if you want to be more showy. If you just want to look alittle more beefy then you get carlsson 2/6 19in or HRE 540R. Hope this help and good luck on finding your rims.

Thanks buddy.

Can't find one with an HRE but will find it elsewhere on the web (never seen them) - great page nonetheless.

Aesthetically, I think the snub nose on the older E's and W104 S's somehow don't match thinner spokes too well typically the more crowded ones like Brabus IV's and VI's, or those with thick spokes/holes like Carlssons, Lorinzers etc seem to work better. I think you have hit the nail on the head with your choices, well done and thanks!

Found the HRE's. An improvement on the BBS's, especially love the deep dish - wonder why others don't make em like that anymore (a technical problem perhaps?). That's the reason why I didn't really fancy the protuding spokes on the Carlssons' you'd suggested.

The 540R's are definitely what I'd consider but veeeerrrrry expensive - makes me wonder whether I should invest in a body kit or engine mods (e.g. Compressor unit) instead..........the quest continues..........

Many thanks HigHal320!

go to the wheel section
check out "Seneka" and "Swift," I think Swift looks kind of like HRE but it doesn't have that much spokes. You can also order custom lip, and cheaper than HRE.
