Was set on 19" for CLS63 but now contemplating 20s

Hi Guys,

I know 20s look so much better on a CLS - but have had bad luck with 20" wheels in North NJ... anyways, I am really contemplating 20s for the CLS just because the CLS can fit up to 22" no problem.

I heard I can go 245/35/20 and 285/30/20 -is this ideal to run on an AMG model? Traction is important, but I also don't want to worry every time I drive watching the road like a maniac for any little pot hole, etc... I feel the 19s would be safer but might not give that "look".

With the 245/35 and 285/30 - he said that this is much better for ride and potholes then 255/30 and 295/25

Can anyone elaborate. I don't want some botched setup - and don't want lack of traction esp with a modded AMG... but can't have a setup where 1 pothole is going to destroy a 20" wheel...

I look forward to your thoughts.

Realy? And what tire size one might use on 22s for CLS?

Yes, for your requirements, 245/35 & 285/30 combo is the way to go.

Thanks for the reply. Just simply google CLS 22" and you will see TONS of cars come up... so the fact is, they can fit 22s and people do it fairly often.

Will the 245/285 stance vs the 255/295 stance (both 20") look goofy or different, or could you not notice the difference.

Also - the 245/285 20"s vs the 255/285 19s.... how much safer are the 19s on the road, or would the same outcome happen between the 2 if you hit the exact same bumps/potholes, etc.

The 19" and 20" setup have the same middle number -- 35 and 30 respectively.. so they probably would drive the same... and the 245/285 will give me more meat on the tire.

Again, my question is what tire size could be used for a 22" wheel on CLS?

The absolute highes diameter of mounted tire that CLS will accept, without rubbing, is 26.8" which is 245/35-20 & 285/30-20. Some people are claiming running 255/35-20 & 295/30-20 - that is 27" diameter.

So for 22" wheel it would be 245/25-22 or 255/25-22. Assuming that these tire sizes exist (and I'm preaty sure they do not) - that would be like driving on rubber bends, not tires. You do not want to (and quit correctly so) to drive on 255/30. Now imagine "driving" on 255/25? Shows maybe, streets - not a chance.

Also, it sounds like ride quality and pothole "survivability" are high on your list. With this in mind and since you're planning to use 245/35-20 & 285/30-20, might consider using 245/40-19 & 275/35-19 (or 285/35-19). This however, IMO, would make no sense for AMG.

20's: You should run 30F/25R series tires, which are very low profile. It's a look, taste thing, but not with comfort. Speaking from experience on 20's for about 18 months.

On potholes, yes you are running a risk, but that is up to the individual to live with. Some areas such as up on the Northeast end are terrible with potholes. 22's...I would not even attempt that on a CLS.

To the OP, I am selling a set of 20 inch Vossen 083's with Michelin Pilot A/S Plus btw. 255/30/20 295/25/20.

I've got 20 s and thinking 21 is the way to go. Oh yea I'm on 305s with 11 inches out back. 25 or 30 sidewall.

I'm pretty sure you can run a 255/30/20 and 305/25/20 on the CLS if using 9-9.5" up front and 10.5-11" rear wheels.

305 is waay to wide for 10.5, and if i could do it over again i would go smaller on my 11". yes it will fit, but it wont look right imo. I am a sucker for a mild stretch.

I'm running 305s on an 11" rear and it has a mild stretch. I doubt it's "way" too wide for a 10.5"

So here is a pic of my 20x11 falken 305/25/20. I dont see stretch at all sidewall is straight up and down.

Expensive mistake on my part.

OP, If this is the look u want Ill sell you mine at a $200 discount for the two off what tirerack.com has them listed for.
Then I can buy the next size or 2 down!

The problem with yours is that the Falken tires always run narrower than most other brands. You're lucky if a 305 Falken tire is even 295mm wide, we have sold them for years and it's always been like that. If you run Pirelli, Michelin, or Conti...the sizing is much more true.

I see a slight stretch there in the picture but not drastic. Your next choice in Falken would be a 285/30R20

depends on the weather
the 20's will have a noticeably stiffer ride as it will have a shorter sidewall.

Airmatic Comfort mode makes the ride nice.
No Pain no gain, all about the STANCE!

OP was any of this helpful?

Would be cool if tire rack had a flush, and hella flush calculator with offsets, and stretched tire options
